I think you guys got the Flying Tigers movies information from my Movie/TV News some time ago.
To clarify, Cruise and John Woo (who directed Cruise in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2) both announced movies about the Flying Tigers at about the same time. Woo wanted Liam Neeson to play Chennault and Cruise saw the role for himself,
I haven't heard one word about either of these movies since.
The war movie I'm looking for the most is THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY from Bruce McKenna who was a writer on BAND OF BROTHERS and head writer on THE PACIFIC. The last I heard about this movie was it was being fast-tracked by the studio.

Judging by the interview, I like Lucas' approach to this. He jokingly mentioned this as a "trilogy" (Star Wars reference there) and of course has to include some of the "black experience" but, he mostly focuses on the middle part where the action is. This will appeal to all audiences hopefully, without getting to preachy. Leave that to the documentaries and earlier Tuskeegee Airmen flick. We want to see some airplane action here.
Sure they're going to "ham it up" but like he mentioned, movies of the past had that aspect anyways, so whatever.
Lucas has mostly been an outsider to Hollywood and does things his own way, like Star Wars. Else it would have never been made. He's even been sued by their unions for not putting the long boring credits at the beginning of it.
Like this Redtails movie he had to finance it himself outside of Hollywood, else it would have never happened. Kudos to George.
