My wife keeps telling me that we are going to clean out the garage. I wonder what she means by that. She isn't giving/throwing away my "military museum"as I call it is she? I always tell her that they are not toys, you can't give a kid these things, they will break. They are collectables. She calls it that stuff too. Is that a bad thing?

Based on many of your comments, this will sound familiar:

Under cover of darkness, I spirit new XD boxes from my van to my garage. My garage is used for stuff, not cars, so I can more or less hide the XD for a little while, until one day when I decide to bring it in the house to unpack it.

At that point, my wife will say, "Another toy?!" , and I can honestly (more or less) answer, "Oh, I got this a while back." That usually disarms her.

Face it--you're doomed. I would start looking into a local storage unit that offers long-term rates. A couple good padlocks, and you can set it up and decorate to your heart's content and she'll never know. Just tell her you took everything to goodwill, to bring joy to an unfortunate child, and set up the storage unit instead. Stop by on the way home from work, or when you run out for errands--just be careful not to linger too long, lest someone get the wrong impression...

Hah! My wife brought up the "rental storage" option, too. My planes and tanks are too big and half are still unopened in the boxes... I have actually had less time to open them and display them than I had to just buy them and throw them in the spare room. Nothing worse than buying into a habit you can't enjoy properly or anytime you want.

So now the "play room" is packed to the ceiling and it's really unmanageable, so a good chunk of my collection will probably go up on ebay, gradually and slowly over the next year (so I have plenty of time for parting farewells to each bit of the collection). :(

But if there is one thing that BBI and 21st have learnt me, it's the rule of equivalent trade, quality, and value: The newer 1:18 items keep getting bigger and better, and pricier, so I'd rather sell 3 or 4 of my older toys to afford one of the awesome new ones from any of those companies. In this fashion, I win (so I tell myself). I essentially keep my collection, just in a downsized, more manageable, and more valuable capacity. :)

I can’t say that any more I usually get the roll over eyes and then the stern warning “that better be the last plane…mister”. I usually hang my head and say ok with the thought lingering in my head until the next one, then as she turns away I crack a small diabolic smile……and say to my self until next time.

But I told her about all the new aircraft that are coming out this year, and have the blessed ok to get them :? ……….I just have to tell her before hand that I am getting them…. :?

I had a box of stuff delivered to work.

My wife brought the flu home and gave it to me. For a couple of days we were home, sick, together. The box was delivered. My wife got well first and since she works just down the street from my job, my job called her to let her know there was a box for me...

Fortunately, I was too sick for her to raise TOO much of a fuss, but I don't think she's quite over it yet...

I am starting to tell her I could be in more expensive hobbies and that normally shuts her up….. for a awhile at least…now I ask her how much she spends on her Franklin mint doll collection..

Ha! We are in the same boat my friend. My 3rd bedroom is filled wall to wall and floor to ceiling with boxes...some unpacked. A tiny path to walk thru the room to get to the window and be able to look at my bounty. As somewhat of a neat freak it gives me stress diarehha (sp?) ...lol to go in the room. TOTALLY freaks out the wife. She keeps saying I 'have a problem". and I need to consolidate my dollies and toys. One day on ebay I think I am going to see my stuff withthe phrase "my husband is downsizing his collection...". i think I do have a problem though...I have bought stuff on ebay I didn't think I haad to go into the room to store it and find out I had it all along and forgot! LOL

I make four times as much as my Girlfriend/Fiance I pay all the bills as well. So she has never questioned or given me a hard time about my collection. In fact she was very proud of the fact that she remembered who Eddie Richenbacher was the other night. I personally have come to appreciate the diversity of the her Giraffe Collection that she keeps on her side of the house. So for now peace riegns.

In all rality--the mrs is okay that I buy toys and collect real medals and patches. She knows the real militaria collection will be her summer holiday in Tuscany when I croak  But, she has said on more than one ocasion to her cohorts that she rather i did this than gamble, booze, or strip club my money away.

Yes! I know that feeling, Light.Inf.Scout! When you spend less time in "the rooom" you lose track of the beastly pile of plastics. It doesn't happen frequently, thank god, but sometimes I'll buy something online or on ebay and go downstairs to "the room" all cheery smiles... until I see the same damn thing sitting right there in the middle of the stack of boxes, laughing at me. :|

So again with the cycle of four R's: Rage for not remembering in the first place, Remorse for spending money but not more time in "the room" (padded with toys, no less!), Reluctance as I debate whether to return the plane or sell it back on ebay, then the inevitable shrug of casual Resignation as I happily realize that I now have two of the same item.

Which only lasts until the next time I goof like that. Sigh.

"Oh well!"

I agree 100% and I think my wife does too. I spend alot of time with her, I spend alot of time with my 4 young kids.

In addition, I collect XD planes and tanks and occassionally play paintball.....all much better hobbies than boozing, womanizing and gambling.....and I don't play golf either.

Man, I buy all the military "collectible" stuff, guns and booze...I guess I'm really screwed!

Well I feel pretty good after reading these :D I can't hide anything from my wife anyway. I have all of my stuff in a building at my fathers house,he lives behind me, and the wife comes up there sometimes. She knows if something is new or not even if I rearrange, she is like the KGB  But all she ever says when I come in with something new is
Where are you going to put that??
