Ships will never be in 1/18. Not in any mass produced form. There is the odd museum piece that's 1/20 or the odd r/c ship that someone has made but that's it.
So really, if you want XD ships your're on your own (not talking PBR's and LCM's here....these are boat sized and are realistic. I'm talking about ships: submarines, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, carriers etc).
Of course even if you can make them yourself they are gigantic. Destroyers at least 20 feet and battleships over 40 feet long and 6 feet wide.
Over the years i've tried various ways of solving the problem of getting 1/18 ships in my collection. The best ideas i've come up with are:
1) forced perspective: basicallly these are smaller scale ship models (between 1/72 and 1/350 is ideal) that you hold close to your eye while viewing 1/18 models in the backround. When lined up properly, which is pretty easy to do, you get a very good sense of how big the ship is compared to your 1/18 scale items.
2) flats: basically these are 1/18 sideviews of ships. I made one of a corvette a few years ago. It wasn't that hard to make and was designed to fold every 3 feet for easy storage. When unfolded and proped up it was about 12 feet long and showed the profile of a corvette very nicely in 1/18 scale. Of course no depth to it at all. Basically it is like one of those cardboard stand ups you see in movie theatres, only of a ship rather than a person. The lack of 3 dimensionality left me feeling 'flat' however. Heh.
3) magnifiers: similar to the forced perspective, the idea here was to do all ship models to a somewhat smaller but constant scale (i would choose 1/40 because it's about half the size of XD and there are a number of r/c models available in this scale). You can buy magnifying glasses that you wear that make everything appear 2x larger. So you simply put the glasses on and look at the ship, which now appears twice the size, or about 1/18. By looking at your 1/18 items without the glasses on you can get a good size comparison. I've tried this on smaller items and it works better than you'd think. However, you can't have any XD figures directly interact with the smaller scale ships.
So that's it. All the ideas are pretty lame i know but that's the best i've come up with. All have major drawbacks but have one advantage: they are a heck of a lot more practical than trying to build a 1/18 battleship in your basement.

I won't hold my breath for any boats or ships but....I guess if you were ambitious you could scratchbuild.

I would go for a PT 109. The Japanese Ship cutting it in half would be a bit much.blurx7 wrote:How about a PT boat, followed by a series of 1/18 navy figures, with the Mae West jackets and those cool navy helmets. I am liking this. The idea of portions of a larger ship is cool, too. I can really picture an AA battery from a Destroyer. Or how about a "Mr. Roberts" cargo ship diorama complete with Ensign Pulver and the Captain and his Palm tree? Back to the PT Boat, how about a McArthur figure? We got Patton, after all.

I think ships would be great to have in 1:18 scale. I doubt we will see anything big. But wouldn't it be great if one of the R/C companies built something.....that is not too unreasonable.
I'd love a German Type VII or XI Submarine (mind you they'll be over 3.5m long).
There are some smaller ships out there that can be adapted to 1:18 scale...will post pics when available.
Cheers

there are some nice r/c submarine kits made by Robbe of Germany. They do a type VIIIC, type XXI and modern German attack sub. All are in 1/40 scale (so about half the size we xders need them to be) and are around 6 feet long. I've been tempted to get the type vii for some time, despite its ''small'' size.
Here are pics of the built up U-47. Just a tad under six feet long.

They also have a 1/40 german E boat and it's rumoured they may be doing a 1/40 Gato.
