Nothing strange about the "Smoke II" F-104C in the German F-104G box  They appeared like that all across the nation, so its stock

I was going to open it anyway...
:D
For some reason I only saw a few of the airforce 104's early on but the boxes and planes were always busted. Then the German boxes showed up and collected dust - I was golding out for one when they all suddenly disappeared. Probably all went back to the stockroom. This has been the only Smoke II I have spotted in the south west atlanta area.

there are several collecting dust at walmarts on the north and northeast side of town- having the silver and the german ones, I have'nt justified buying the camo one; but I still look everytime I pass one.

All Sabres are gone from the two Walmarts here that actually got any in. Glad I snapped mine up when I did because they sold like hotcakes! Now theres just one sad looking XD 190D, two Smoke IIs that have been up on the top shelf forever and a bunch of the new 32x Corsairs and Stukas left. I was hoping to find the D-Day troops but no dice.

It's probably been said already, but 21C really needs to make that 1:32 Geman Opel truck in 1:18.

The new D-Day figures have hit San Antonio. Also plenty of grey short barreled Panzer IV's.

OK, here is my Wal Mart report for the Christmas season in the Fresno area of central California. The stores seem to be about as stocked with 21c products as they will ever be for the rest of the year, so this is my area, the breadbasket of the United States, at its best:

Kings Canyon (south Fresno) Wal Mart:
6 RC Panzer IV H and M113s
12 assorted 32x "snake" Stukas & "big hog" Corsairs
1:48 armor & planes

Shaw Ave. (west Fresno) Wal Mart:
6 "Mitch's Squitch" F-86s
1 each: "'Undertaker" P-51, "Smoke II" F-104, "Tropical" Stuka
3 1:18 BF-109Gs
D-Day Figures

Assorted old 32x armor
6 1:48 modern Iron Horses packs
10 1:48 armor old

10 32x Iron horse packs: various types
3 each of 32x Stukas and Corsairs
Assorted old 32x armor: Brumbars, Panzer IVDs, etc.
new 1:48 armor & planes
1:144 tanks & planes (old)

Madera, Ca. Wal Mart:
4 1:18 "Bunker Hill" Corsairs
6 1:18 "Tropical" Stukas

4 or so 32x Zeros & Macchis
3 32x Dogfight packs

There are no Avengers, new RC Panzers, or M-48s. Mig 15s are also missing, but were at the west Fresno store within the past month. I am most pleased with this selection nonetheless and after this recon (all today) have finally earned my Christmas break

That's some scouting report Tman. Thanks for sharing. Too bad I'm too far away to get in on that pile of Pak-40's at the Selma WM. I could use a few more. :(

Around Pitt we're finally seeing the D-Day figures... And some more BotB2 have surfaced here and there, but don't linger.

No Pak's, Hano's, or Halftracks of any kind to speak of, and planes are sparse and still limited to the odd Mustang or whatnot lingering on the pegs.

New D-Day figures in OC - only 1 WM

Post by markecho » Sat Dec 23, 2006 12:23 pm

Well found 1 set of new D-day figures at 1 WalMart out of the 4 I visited this morning. Toy aisles are like a mini-disaster zone (X-mas) and I had to walk up and down 2 aisles to find the figures I wanted cuz 2 were in one section and 2 were in another section and some were buried.

Saw 12 Sabers (with red star) at one other Walmart also!

No Pak-40s or sign of that case! Wierd!

New figures are cool but paint ops on the face are a little too muddy. And yes these figures are semi-gloss...I prefer the matte finish of the original BOB tanker. Also the removable helmet is kinda big- Won't fit many other headsulpts snug - but fits the figure it comes with just fine. I am a little dissapointed with them cuz they don't match previous tanker looks..I just want the crews to match - the matte vs gloss uniforms, the faces painted vs plastic unpainted....(but I am being picky). But like the new articulation.
Also heads are easier to remove - possibly do to the new peg design. But other heads will not fit snug in the new body - some trimming of the peg will be required because the old heads pegs are a little taller.

Here is a comparison pic:
Image

and combined crews on a Sherman:

cool accessory is the binoc case:

Now with 5 tankers, I am not sure how to pose them on the move!

That's because they all wound up a ways north of you in the Selma, Ca Wal Mart where the Wal Mart delivery truck decided to dump its shipment. There were 60+ when I was there a few days ago! Never seen that much XD in my life in one spot. If you want to make the road trip northwards, a bunch should be there for quite some time

BTW, nice comparison pics of the D-Day figures. I can live with the semi-gloss and the oversized helmet, but I was disappointed with the fact that the pegs for the heads and spare arms are different on these figures. This limits their easy customization, quite unlike the old BoB figures which could easily switch parts from most other figure series.

I guess Rowsdower's mispackaged Smoke F-104 wasn't an exception--I saw 2 F-104s today with the Smoke paint scheme in Marinenflieger boxes at the Benton Harbor Walmart. Plus the Flying Undertaker P-51 is still there... If it's still there after Christmas, I may have a little pow-wow with the manager--I'm getting tired of waiting for the South Bend TRU to get restocked on the bbi version. There are also still several of both Mutt variants, and the old Hanomag and M3A3... No new 1/18 armor, no new aircraft.
Ok, so now I am off to unload a trailerload of fresh-sawn hardwood lumber. My back hurts already--there are some hickory planks on there that are 2 inches thick, 22 inches wide, and about 14 feet long. My poor planer is going to howl when I start running them through!

 Yeah I stopped by WM today to pick up some supplies and they still had that Smoke II in the Marinenflieger box plus a few more in the correct Smoke II boxes that no doubt will be eating up precious XD shelf space for months to come. There were two bent prop Undertakers as well, I want a 21st Mustang but I just can't deal with those bent props.

Sadly, there are no D-Day figures in any of the five local stores. People are selling them on eBay for around $15 each though. A ten dollar profit per figure for those scallywags lol.

new D-Day tanker crew

Post by markecho » Sat Dec 23, 2006 5:00 pm

Dang tman...I did read your post earlier - that is crazy! I am lucky to have found the vehicles I wanted in Vegas, but just was surprised they did not make it down here yet. Distribution-smistribuition

Ok so I spent more time trying to come up with some stuff with the new crew and found an interesting surprise. The fixed arms make some nice natural poses (second and third pictures). The one that was supposed to be used for the map (left arm) didn't work so well with the map but made a cool pose like a hanging arm.

So here is just the new figures as a crew:
Image

A top hatch pose - I have always liked the absense of joints for just display purposes - makes it look more modelish and the arm seems to hang naturally:
Image

And then an alternate pose so your second tank in the column will not look the same: (just gotta get another head)
Image

And then mixed both the arms to minimize the joint look. But had to give the commander a promotion (cuz the arms that I used for the commander position had only private ranks).

Thanks for the side by sides. Shows how much different these guys are from the BOB's.

Wonder if the glossy look is due more to use of a harder plastic (for the articulation) than because of the paint itself...

I don't dig the glossy uniforms and skin either and Santa is bringing me a new compressor and airbrush so I might give that a shot. Of course I have to wait for Walmart to actually get some D-Day figures in stock and my magic eight ball is broken so god knows when that will be.
