Play Sets

Post by mrkisskissbangbang » Tue Oct 10, 2006 6:49 am

Are there ever going to be more 1:18 scale playsets in the future? I really like the one that were put out a few years ago.

A few things I'd like to see from either 21st Century or Build-A-Rama would be some German guard posts/check point. A similar Allied check point wouldn't be too bad either. A forward command post and a variety of tents.

Does anyone have the M*A*S*H playset from the television show? I saw it up on E-bay a short while back. Does it have some potential for use in 1:18 scale? Also, are the figures any good for modification?

Cheers

I had the MASH set back in the 80's when it came out (I had the whole line), the figures are nowhere near as detailed as what's common today, had pretty much small joe (pre swivle arm) articulation, but suffered from (like most TV show based action figures of the day) creepy smiling headsculpts. As for the vehicles, the chopper is too toyish with its big friction powered wheels under the landing skids, the Jeep's so-so, but the ambulance is pretty cool, though not as detailed as say a 21st vehicle and a little underscaled., I had 2 though they are pretty damaged due to time, the very brittle plastic they were constructed of and other factors.
As for the playset itself, the tents were made of a very thin plastic (kind of like fastfood soda cups lids) and held together with double sided tape but the real value is the assessories are there were a ton of them, molded in O.D. green and brown plastic, there were: desks, chairs, tables, benches, a typewriter, shelves, phonograph, beds and probably more I can't think of. One other thing all the med symbols(familar red cross) were red on a yellow background instead of white, I don't know if this was the toy company's way of advoiding problems with the Red Cross or what. Hope this helps.

Build-A-Rama most make some more 1/18 stuff. And I hope 21st will make a new playset soon. It does not have to be big or a building.

There are some relatively new playsets out now. I haven't seen anyone mention them yet, but I got them about a month or so ago at my local WM. They are basically rehashes of different parts already available but one can never have too many. They are 1) Stalingrad (with the grey sdkfz222, the tall ruined building section, some russian troops and some germans. 2)defense of Calais with the same bunkers from the defense of the bluffs set, some germans and the quad AA gun that to my knowledge was only available on the wirblewind up till now. 3) Okinawa - the pedestal thingee from squad in the attack without the broken column but with an American Flag, a jungle camo Stuart and some US marines and Japanese.

I was especially excited about the Calais set as I like the Quad AA being seperate so I can put them on rooftops, bunkers, in the back of a truck (if they ever make one) or on a flak tower.

The sets dfoos has mentioned are 1:32 scale sets. It would be really awesome to see those sort of pieces in 1:18 - especially the building fronts, bridge, bunker & sandbags :)

How well they would sell is hard to say, and I think that may be the real matter in question. The origional XD Playsets ultimately didn't sell that well at TRU, evidenced by the fact that many of us were picking them up at extreme discount 2-3 years after they were first out. 21c did an excellent job with them (they're nearly as good as Pola buildings) but the company may want to be expending its efforts in areas that will bring in more profit...

OOOpppssss, sorry
I collect both 1:18 and 1:32nd and comment on both sides of the forum. I forgot which one I was on :)

I also wish they would come out with more 1:18th Buildings and accessories. There are way more available for decent prices for 1:32 than 1:18. I managed to get ahold of the farm, barn, building front and fountain set for my guys but I had to get them on ebay at a price. also, my farmhouse is missing the roof because I bought it used. There could definately be more that I would appreciate, or even re release these as you can always get away with several of the same buildings turned in different directions in the same dio.

I'm also waiting (hoping) for large scale bunkers (concrete type) and large scale sandbag emplacements and such.

I also found some cool scale wooden furniture at a dollar store so there could be pillaged chairs and tables to pile equipment on in the farmhouse. these have added alot of depth to my displays. I was going to take some pics and post them later this week when I get a few minutes to do so. I found some furniture with the swastika cut into the furniture as part of the design. Not intended to be such by the manufacturer, I'm sure, but could look cool in an SS diorama though. I'll post pics later. Also, If anyone has one of the farmhouses or the other ruined building for sale / trade, let me know, I'd love to have more.

Thanks for the input, especially Loki on the MASH playset. I was hoping it would have been made of really sturdy plastic. If I find one super cheap, maybe I'll still pick one up.

Concrete bunkers and sandbags would be fantastic! If PTE, Soldier Force and the Corps can put out little building facades, lookout posts, supply depots....etc, to go with their figures and vehicles. I think the big boys can also put out some added accessories. It does't have to be anything huge either. A simple checkpoint would do.

I have managed to collect several buildings over the years (Playmobil) and other miscellaneous playsets. But they don't really look all that great together. G-scale buildings are beautiful but expensive. I'd love to have a complete street and train station.

Cheers

This is all I have. The carded figures say 3.75" MASH figures.
Winchester, Clinger, Hawkeye, and Honeycut. They also make Col. Potter, Radar, Hot Lips, Father Mulcahe, Clinger in Pink dress, and a couple others.

No this post was wishing for new playsets in 1:18 scale. The M*A*S*H* playset that was mentioned was from the 1970's. The figures are 3 3/4 scale which is close to 1:18. I was thinking that the buildings and and tents may make a nice back drop.

Cheers
