Sounds like 21C has done a lot of retooling on this new mustang.
Pressures on BBI to keep producing top quality items and we all win with better quality replicas, God Bless America and capitolism.

I got to put my eyeballs  on 21st Century's mustang prototype in the new mold at ComicCon 05.

I was impressed. You are gonna like it. :D
One hundred and fifty three - 1:18 scale aircraft on the ceiling looks  damn good!

Might just be the camera angle, but it seems like the drop tanks are set too far back (like on the BBI version). But some of you have seen it in person and have not commented on that so I'm hoping the tanks are properly placed.

I don't recall seeing the drop tanks on any of the Comic Con/iHobby prototypes at the time.

I really like the lines the new Mustang. It just looks right to me. The nose and aft fuselage sections look spot-on! Another $45 down the drain, hehehehe....

From the pic I see I have to say it looks nice. I dont like the look of the tires on the landing gear, they look to thin to me and dont seem to have the diamond tread pattern that most Mustangs had on the tires. Otherwise it looks pretty good to my eye. I want to see the cockpit though, I want to see if it has the detail that BBI put in theirs. I also have to ask myself if I want or need another 1/18th Mustang? I am very happy with "Hurry Home Honey" to be honest. I like what 21st has done to improve their Mustang but I think they should have done a B model instead, it would have been something different for the 1/18th Mustang series. NOW if 21st would come out with "Old Crow" paint scheme in NMF then there would be no question that I would purchase one. I like the "Petie The 2nd" paint scheme but I have to see more detailed photos to make a final decision to pick one of these New Tool Mustangs up. But the question remains do I need another Mustang? I'm thinking on that as well.

I dont know, I'm just not getting the "cant wait to buy it!" vibe from this one  Maybe after I see it up close at Walmart I will pick one up. Definitely not an on-line buy for now.

I agree with Ski, the lines didn't appear bad or distracting when I saw it in person. It looked great IMO!

Hey guys I noticed something. The other day I got my "Historic Aviation" catalog and in it there was a photo of 21st's new tool Mustangs! I live in Minnesota and buy alot from them. Anyway on the back page they showed a photo of "Ridge Runner" with the figure of the pilot. It was a side profile of the plane and from what I saw I didnt like. The first thing I noticed was the canopy dont look any different from the BBI version, second was yes it has the "forward rake" of the P-51 but the landing gear looks to thin and the main tires look also very thin. Finally the tail section looks wrong to me as well. I couldnt do much studying of the "Petie The 2nd" P-51 because of the angle they had it sitting so I cant comment on that. Now I have NO IDEA if these are only proto type photos but if they are whats going to be the "final" product I'm gonna pass.

Now this aint a slam on 21st in no shape or form but I just didnt like what I saw. I am gonna give "Historic" a call to see where they obtained these photos because believe it or not I was lookin forward to these releases but now I'm not so sure. I'll give everyone a heads up on what I find out.

MightyMustang - thanks for the info, does the pilot look like a new sculpt, new articulation, or 'same ole"?

Andy,

I tried that and for some reason it didnt work. However if you want to take a look at "Ridge Runner" go to www.historicaviation.com and click on the "toys and models" tab then scoll down to where it says "1/18th P-51D" and there you willl see it. For some reason they dont have "Petie The 2nd" pictured but they do have it in the catalog.

flayrah,

The pilot looks to be a new sculpt and better then the original but as far as anything else I dont know.

I didnt have a chance to call Historic Aviation yesturday but rest assured I will today to see what the deal is with those photos.

If you don't mind, having seen it in person recently at iHobby, here's my take on those (the photos are not that accurate)

Canopy does look different, it's just the angle for that. That was the first thing I noticed about it long with the much more accurate nose.
The gear as the appearance of being too skinny in the photo, but it wasn't so bad in person. The tires were a little too thin, but the gear itself was just fine. Tail section was one of the things I admired most, epseically the (finally) correct tail gear.

Keep in mind that these should be the normal walmart price, so they'll be cheaper than the BBI Mustang was. I only got to see the BBD version at iHobby... but it was gorgeous IMO. ANd one thing that I've yet to see on a Mustang is that the intake at the bottom of the Mustange you could see through the grating and the intake went pretty far back. I really loved that about it. And the Rudder/Horizontal Stabilizers were much much better to move than the BBi version.

mkxiv,

Thanks for the pics on your site. I have one question though? I saw the up close photo of "Ridge Runners" nose section and whats the deal with the raised rivets??? I really hope those aint gonna be on the 1/18th version and thats a photo of the 1/32nd scale version?! Didnt 21st have those on their S1 versions? If that is indeed whats going to be on the new tool Mustangs you can count me out on buying one because I hate raised rivets!!!

The landing gear and wheels plus the canopy are a big turn off to me guys and plus I have yet to see photos of the cockpit detail. So in essence I think I'm gonna wait until I see the Mustangs at Walmart or wait until first hand reviews come in until I buy one. I'm not nit picking but I am a die hard Mustang fan and I want to see perfection or close to it and some are calling 21st's new tool Mustang the most accurate and detailed ever. From what I am seeing I have to disagree. So I will wait until seeing it in person or for more detailed reviews until I plunk down cash for it.

Sorry guys but the photo of "Ridge Runner" with the raised rivets was wrong. Thats the 1/32nd version and not the 1/18th version. Thank god I was beginning to worry there!

Well I went ahead and did it. I pre-ordered the new tool Mustang from 21st, "Petie The 2nd" from Historic Aviation. I spent a little more then I would have from Bad Cat but Historic is MN based and this means I will get the Mustang alot quicker. I just really hope I dont get bit in the butt by buying one because my expectations are really high on this release.

Heres somthings that changed my mind. I looked at the photos at Area 21 and I just love the "Petie" paint scheme plus the "Little Bastard Logo". The outline of 21st's P-51 are down to the mark and spot on. Now as I pointed out there are problems in my opinion I have with the landing gear (looks weak), the tires (to thin) and the canopy looks to be the same as the BBI Mustang canopy but other then that everything from the photos I saw look good and MUCH better then their S1 release. I have no clue how the 21st Mustang will match up with BBI's excellent version but trust me I will make an honest comparison which I'm sure we all will.

Again I just hope and pray I'm not in store for a big let down.

Well, look at it this way, you will at least have a P-51 with actual 1:18 markings, not 1:24!! In the end, it's a win-win situation. Each paint scheme is unique.....

I saw on the Bad Cat website that the 21st Mustang wont be arriving until March and I called Historic Aviation and they confirmed it! I cancelled my order for the Mustang. I have a good Mustang already so I dont need another so thats the end of it. I guess I will play the waiting game for the Avenger. But I am happy to hear that the Bunker Hill F4U is in rout to Bad Cat so it looks as though I will get one of those.

But it sucks to see and hear that the Mustang looks like a March release. Delayed again! But oh well thats the name of the game.

Does anyone know if the Petie Mustang has the same rearward-bent prop blades as Ridge Runner and Flying Undertaker?

Thanks,
Rogo
