How About Unpainted Planes?!?!?!

Post by Dubar1 » Sat Mar 11, 2006 11:47 am

Seems like there are paint jobs out the ying-yang on most of the planes already out. How about an undecorated version with a set or 2 of decals??? Give us a chance to play modeler for a change. I'd rather start with a unpainted plane than having to strip the paint or load a painted plane with more paint thus hiding some detail.

I agree!

Yes, I agree. I think this has been mentioned before, but buried in other threads. I'm glad you started one just about this.

I think offering planes in just the aircraft factory markings (basic camo and national markings), but nothing else, is a good idea. Include numbers and maybe a few squadron markings to do our own choice. BBI is already on that track with the Blue Angels F-18 and the state National Guard F-16's. Or as you mention, a completely unpainted version.

I have several repaints in process (not sure when I'll ever be done :? ), but each repaint is going over an existing 21C or BBI paint job.

Maybe the companies view this as being unmarketable. Perhaps the painting procedure requires, say, the white in the star and bars to go on at the same time as any numbers. So it may be more complicated in the manufacturing process than just not putting on the numbers, etc. If that is the case, then just the base paint/camouflage and include all markings as decals.

My sentiments exactly...

I would hope that the companies would have the foresight to see that Unpainted planes would be marketable rather than the converse because I think most people would rather have something unique and not just something where a million other people have the same plane with say the number THREE-SIX-ONE (cough cough) however, I did like the fact that BBI made a Royal Australian Air Force version of the F/A-18 in the markings of 75 Squadron. Only 250 were made. Maybe there will be Canadian CF-188 markings? who knows. Woudn't be surprised if there are.

Admiral says they have a limited run of F86s coming with no markings. I hope its successful - I usually prefer to do my own markings, or just leave it plane (that's why I think my F16 is one of my favorites)

It also would be nice to see some of the vehicles unmarked. I have several Walkers I've removed the decals on in hopes of doing a South Vietnam/Thai/Brazil version soon (haven't decided which one)

Yes, Admiral is releasing 100 of these unpainted models (F-86s) soon. I'm hoping that the very tiny "placards" and markings all over the aircraft will be left alone. We'll see.
