The Razorback came with ONE bomb that you can only mount under the fuselage in place of the bellytank. The bubbletop comes with TWO bombs that mount on the outer wing stores and no they don't replace the rocket tubes you still get two of those also. With this plane you can have it all, belly tank in the center, rocket tubes, and bombs, all mounted together. :D

oh. Isn't that fun.

Are the bombs the same as the little one that came with the razorback or are they bigger?

Is the belly tank the same one that came with the razorback or is it the other, lobe shaped one, that you often see on the bubbletop P-47"s?

Yep pretty fun, a Jug ain't a Jug without bombs on the wings. Yes it's the same drop tank, the bombs are also the same standard 500lb GP with addition of the yellow HE stripes, and the pilot is the same figure as came with the Razorback but is in full leather flight gear vice khaki pants. Nice find as this particular Wal-mart is notorious for having jack s***!

so you think that represents a 500lb bomb? It looked too small to me...more like a 100lb bomb. I think the bombs with the P-38 are more the size of 500lb bombs, no?

Nope, they're 500 pounders. A 1k bomb is as tall as a grown man! See pic below for accurate scale. The 500lb M43 GP is 5th from left whereas the 100lb is 3rd from left. The average M43 500lbr was 57" to 64" long depending on tail and fuze option which there were 3 fuze options and 6 tail options, and case was 14" in dia.
True bomb wt was 535lbs. We used to drag these out of the jungles of southern Guam so could dispose of them properly so no poacher would blow himself up (NAVMAG Guam sat right in the middle of a wildlife refuge where poachers frequented). Truthfully the bombs with the Tbolts are slightly off scale coming in between the M31 300lb and M43 500lb but they measure up closer to the M43. The XD bombs are more like M64's really (64 not relative to year of adoption etc, only mod desig). A 100lb bomb is quite smaller in comparison and is what's likely found on a SBD's wing store. Retired in this line of work so excuse me for over-expounding...

<img src="http://pictures.auctionarms.com/313902/ ... 9896f5.jpg">
Bombs pictured range from 23lbs to 4,000lbs. You can't judge a bombs wt strictly by overall size but by explosive component used and it's ratio to case wt. Comb B is a heavier substance than Amotol for instance.

that's very interesting..

so what size are the bombs that come wth the P-38?

To me the bombs that come with the thunderbolts look too small as compared to pictures of bomb carrying P-47's i have seen..

Should be an M44 1k I would think but in looking at one of my XD P38's it appears to be an M34 2k.

I'd better hit the local Wal-Marts and see if this plane is in. You guys know I love Bubbletops!

Is that a slightly different head sculpt? Also notice the vintage photo of the groundcrewman laying on the wing to guide the pilot. Pretty neat!

P47 Bubbletop

Post by rmoore456 » Sun Nov 28, 2004 7:58 am

Just got back from a holiday trip to North Carolina, I'm in Illinois. Visited many Walmarts. Didn't find any bubbletops in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee or North Carolina. Found plenty of FW190's both versions, Cobra helos, P40 Flying Tiger, D-Day Spitfire, NKK Spitfire, green and white Stukas, Blond Angel, Huckle de Buck and checkerboard P47, both versions of the Tiger I and the winter Sherman. Also the 1/32 German armor was stacked to the ceilining in most places. No sale prices on anything that I noticed. :(

Now that is what I call a strategic recon. Its amazing that there are still P-40s to be found.

yeah ski I know what you are saying. I just passed up 1 lonely RAF P-40. Looked really out of place on the shelf next to all the 190's. I don't know what is up with the bubbletop... really bugs me too.

I've gone to about 6 Walmarts including the one I found the bubbletop and there's been nothing new. Only 190 hanging around. Over 2 weeks ago the toy manager from the store that had the bubbletops said he would reorder. There's been nothing new yet.

Yeah I haven't seen anymore either. Saw the few at the little podunk WM in NE OK and that was it.

"Bubbletop #2 available for preorder at SBP

Green scheme with checkernose, "Eileen". Of course SBP's description is off referring to a Peg Razorback and as usual no info as to when it may come out. I'd expect this one to be at WM also. Nice looking plane though. I'll wait for either WM or BC to get it, after my last experience with SBP I'll not shop there again, they have lousy customer svc. "

No sightings here in Tennessee. In fact, NOTHING but two FW 190s at any of the five stores I checked. No tanks, either.

Thanks for the heads-up, Aferg re: "Eileen".

There are probably better links, but here's one with a little background:

I think i built a model of this when i was a kid. A 1/72 kit by...hmm..who was it now? I can still see the box; nice box art, sides of box were black...

I used to have all the box arts of all the planes i built hanging on my bedroom wall. :)
