Axis, I used to think exactly the way you were about 1/6 scale... While I've always had 12" figures in my military collection going back to the GI Joe Hall of Fame series from the early 1990s, it has only been in the past 5 years or so that my 1/6 collection has really grown to include WWII and modern artillery, vehicles, armor, and aircraft. The scale does take up a bit of space, but the detail can be incredible and there is certainly a "wow" factor!
Oh, and an update... I added an M134 minigun to the OH-6:
These were frequently carried by OH-6 helicopters in Vietnam and were often field modifications. My mount may not be 100% accurate, but there appeared to be a good deal of variation for how the miniguns were mounted in real life, so I think it works. The parts stay in place without glue so as not to damage the model. The minigun was made by InToys and I modified its mounting bracket, removing a couple parts and painting it OD green.
