Why are Me-109's priced so low?

Post by flayrah » Thu Aug 04, 2016 5:36 pm

It's generally easy to find a 109 - 21st or bbi - for sale in the $70 range (exclusive of any rare or unusual paint schemes). That's consistently the lowest for any 1:18 aircraft. Even the first issue P51 sells for more. What are your thoughts on the low pricing?

Just a quick eBay search for "Ultimate Soldier ME 109" turns up a variety of items - the majority of which seem to be the 21c 32x 1/32 scale BF-109s, not the 1/18 scale ones. The 32x ME109s are frequently in the $50-$80 range MIB these days, which is quite a jump since they once cost between $15-$20. That said, I also see a lot of the 1/18 ME109Es and BF109Gs on eBay for anywhere from $100-$150 range, which is more typical for most of the common 1/18 aircraft in the years after 21c.

The low price more than likely has to do with quantity available or it could also be that for some reason, they are not as popular with collectors, so there are more of them. I know that the Spitfires and Supercobras tend to be among the rarest items because they had a somewhat limited production run, then the molds were lost/destroyed so there have been no further incarnations of them.

The BBI BF109G, particularly the S2 "Hartmann" version may have a lower price at the moment because BBI recently liquidated their stock. Many retailers were selling the BBI 109s in the $50-$80 range at one point - excellent prices for one of the best BF109 models out there.

Yes, I guess I spoke too soon and/or was mistaken. Prices on 1:18 109's aren't that reasonable:

It's shipped in a lead box to keep cosmic rays from melting that expensive plastic they made it from.
