Tamiya acrylics

Does anyone use this type of paints on vehicles or anything?

If so, what do you think of it? I'd like a point of view before I buy any.

I have used these on vehicles before.

I am an acrylic painter first and foremost (which most people will not admit, for fear of being at the mercy of enamel users)

they are okay, i have a hard time finding them where i am.

I have used them on two vehicles, and actually ended up repainting both of them with testors. It doesn't mean that they were bad, but maybe my eye just likes the O.D. testors better?

I use testors acrylics primarily, even though they are expensive, they are great to work with.

I would buy a few a see how you like em, because everybody is different.

acrylics are definitely the only way to go. Model Master by Testors is mostly what i use. Acrylics have a tendancy to dry a bit shiney. Spraying with dullcote after painting is done (wait a day) will kill the sheen and even out the finish.

They are a great paint when thinned properly and airbrushed on. However, they are lousy for brush painting (IMHO). For health reasons I brush paint a lot more than spray and so I get good satisfaction from PollyScale and Modelmaster. When sprayed properly the Tamiya paint lays down nice and dries fast - you can do several coats in a day.

I agree, I use Tamiya acrylics mostly and get great results..
I paint models at my dining room table, so I stick with acrylics.

For my painting especcially on large scale AFVs I use a base coat of an oil based enamble paint, quite often using a spray-can, I then finish of with acrylics, the best thing about acrylics is that they are much easier to clean up afterwards (especially when using an airbrush).

I prefer to use Gunze over Tamiya as I believe the colours to be far superior, however Modelmaster acrylics when you can get them have very accurate Federal Standard colour sets that are great for your modern stuff they also used to be available in spray pouches for there own unique airbrush system with adapters to suit most others.

However I find you get better results hand brushing Tamiya than Gunze acrylics.

One thing you need to be careful of when using acrylics is to make sure they are fully mixed as the matting agent, pigment and thiner seperate over time, this can lead to glossy finishes.

They're the brand I use exclusively with my SW figure customizing. Their brand has more "flex" to it than Testors or PS I've found, and they tend to be a little cheaper too (except for Testors). I only go to Testors if I can't mix the color msyelf, and if I am sure the part won't have friction for wear or flex.

The color ranges are pretty broad, I find that they really don't require a lot of thinning and they brush on nicely. They mix well, the bottles seal WAY better than ANY hobby paint I've ever used (I have a bottle of khaki I've had since I was in 9th grade, and it STILL is good and I'm 27 now. that's a LOT of years that it's perfectly good). The clean-up and thinning is really easy, mixing is relatively easy/effective.

Color selection's nothing to blow your nose at either.

Great stuff, so if you can find it I suggest you nab it. Finding it was my problem, but recently I've found it several places and they're carrying full lines of it.
