Large Apollo Command Module Model

Post by tmanthegreat » Thu Apr 25, 2013 7:21 pm

For the aerospace fans...

Image

I just got this in the other day. The model is made by the Toys & Models Corporation based out of Mahwah, New Jersey. It is supposed to replicate the Apollo 11 Command Module "Columbia" as it looked upon recovery (and hence on display in the National Air & Space Museum).

Image

The model is 1:25 scale, making it one of the largest pre-build Apollo spacecraft models out there (too bad it isn't larger!) The piece is constructed from resin and plastic. Aparently it is largely hand painted. The main hatch can be removed to reveal a highly detailed interior. The interior features the instrument panel with identifiable controls, flight controls, crew seats, seat straps, bracings, and various other details. All windows are clear.

Image

The parachute system, docking hatch, reaction control jets, and heatshield are also well detailed and weathered.

I got a couple of the Dragon CanDo Apollo astronaut figures to create sort of a display with the capsule. The figures are 1:24 scale, just a tad off from the 1:25 scale capsule and don't look out of place...

Image

The Toys & Models Corporation also makes a Gemini capsule (with removable hatches and detailed interior) as well as a Mercury capsule. Like the Apollo model, both the Gemini and Mercury capsules are displayed in re-entry/recovery mode. The company also offers versions of these same three space capsules in cases which have been autographed by astronauts. The retail price for the basic Apollo capsule is anywhere betwween $125 and $190, so its not exactly cheap, but still a great addition to my collection 8)

That is a super cool Apollo Command Module model, Tman. 8)

Not cheap, but it looks to be very well done, with nice texturing. Think this would be a great addition for the space/ rocket collector. And to get a signed model, would put some collectors "over the moon".

Great pics, and review, and thankfully I don't collect space models, otherwise I would probably be all over this.

Great looking model, with nice detail. Need a 1/18 space craft to go with the 1/18 Astronauts Dragon was supposed to make.
