X-1 Landing Gear help

Post by gburch » Mon Jun 20, 2011 7:00 am

With my usual 1/18 obsession on temporary hold, I decided to pick back up on building my X-1 this last weekend. I've made good progress and am at the assembly stage. I'm having he11 figuring out how the main landing gear goes together, though. I think I remember some discussion about this in the past but, for some reason, I'm not getting any help from the forum search function.

So, here are some questions:

-- The two gear bays aren't identical. But I can't tell from the instruction which is left and which is right. What's the solution?

-- Trying both options, in neither case am I able to get the gear to retract enough to get the gear door to close. ??

I've got a pretty nice paint job on the body pieces and I'm loath to mess with this too much, for fear of messing it up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

OK -- back to the dumba$$ club ... I just figured out that I installed the gear into the wells upside down ... that's gonna be a real PITA to undo.

But I'm still wondering about the left/right question ...

You could try PM'ing board member Tman. I think he completed one of these kits.
"you get in a steep dive in this thing and you've got almost no maneuvarabilty at all. You couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the broad side of another barn"
