FW 190 Gear Repair

Post by BLACKSNAKES » Sat Jan 22, 2011 6:11 pm

I can't blame my kids for this one :D . The cats on the other hand are the likely suspects. In the end I had to repair the main gear as one tab on each one failed after hitting the floor  . It is my opinion that the tabs are weak at best for such a big plane. Anyway here is the repair job.

I used 20 gauge sheet metel and welded a 3/32nd nail to it. The 3/32nd nail will be the new tabs.

Then drilled a 5/64 hole through the sheet metal and into the gear.

Then roughed up a 5/64 nail, added super glue, and press in.

All that was left was to remove the closest two screws in the wings near the main gear. Carefully pry apart the wing and sneak in the repaired gear.

All done, and this is all you can see with the gear up.

I'll add a little touch up paint to make this repair almost impossible to notice.

Now if I could just find the tail wheel

Nice repair Blacksnakes. :D

I had this happen to one of my Spitfires, and after several attempts at gluing, I just ended up gluing gear up. Not a big deal, as I like to display in flight, but it would have been nice to keep the option.

Thanks for the post.
I purchased two ex display FW190 with the same problem, and will follow your method to get them back on their wheels.
