You may be right about the pipes- It could be just the perspective. I really can't tell.

I did notice a couple of things, though. I found it interesting in my pic to see the C-clamp/connector device hanging from the U-bolt at the rear of my pic.

I also thought it was odd that the barrel height was different from your pic to my pic...

YANKEE JOHN:

Yep, I noticed the different cannon angles, too.
In case you weren't aware of it, #222 was knocked out by an M10 tank destroyer. After reading the comments by the M10 unit commander's comments, the M10's hit is visible in my photo and is the dark hole right above the third wheel from the front. #222's crew safely escaped from the tank after nightfall. Maybe since the tank's interior wasn't seriously damaged, US troops had the opportunity to play with the controls and move the cannon which might explan the different cannon positions in the photos.
Also, I've seen photos of #222 when it was heading towards Belgium for the Battle of the Bulge and all the front/side bumper plates and hull machine gun were intact. Looking at the photos after #222 was knocked out, many of the fender plates and the machine gun are missing.
