POST F-104 FINDS AND DISCUSSION HERE
you're correct about the 102's, and even more correct about those 'Phabulous Phantoms', and on a similar note, who else here would buy as many 1:18 F-4's as there home could hold?KAGNEW wrote:IF MEMORY SERVES ME F-102s REPLACED THEM AND WEREN'T ANY BETTER.
I HATE TO SAY IT BUT UNTIL F-4Es THE USAF DIDN'T HAVE A GOOD ESCORT. THE NAVYs F-8 CRUSADER WAS THE BEST TILL PHANTOMS

I used to live near the McDonnell Douglas Final assembly building in Saint Louis in the seventies and it was a real treat to watch the F-4s roll out all freshly painted in USAF Camoflage There was a stand they placed them on to test there electronics on and it perfectly sillouetted them when the sun came down, it was very impressive. Yes I'd take an F-4 as well it is one of my all time favorites. But I have to admit I still want to see an A-10 first.

Ahem. Me!'Phabulous Phantoms', and on a similar note, who else here would buy as many 1:18 F-4's as there home could hold?
An F-4 collection would be the brass ring for my 1:18 collection. I could close up shop after that.
...Well, maybe not completely shut down.

That ought to do it. Might want to throw in a Marine version or two just for good measure!let me see
15 USAF paints
4 USN paints
4 GERMAN plus Wild Horse
2 Japan
2 Israil
2 Turkey
thats all the Phabulas Phantoms Phorever i can think of that i'd buy
(Did not mean to hijack the F-104 post, but if any topic can justify it It'd be an F-4 discussion.

I've seen that Phantom and several build ups (48th and 72nd), not really a big fan of Tiger Meet type birds, I prefer the real "battle birds". The extent I'll go, are black tailed types, in particular the ones with Skull and Crossbones!KAGNEW wrote:if you saw the german wild horse paint you would love to have it

Got an F-104 yesterday. Quite nice from what i can see looking at it in the box. Looking forward to putting it together soon.
As a side note: the 479th TFW (which this plane is a representative of) was sent to southern florida in Oct '62, during the Cuban missile crisis and the planes were equipped with tactical nukes in case a strike on Cuba was deemed necessary. (i believe this strike never took place...).
Anyway, would be kind of cool to custom up a nuke to hang from the bottom of it. The underside 'catamaran' sidewinder missile mounts were not very popular in the field as they caused a lot of drag, dirt kicked up by the nose wheel covered the glass nose cones of the sidewinders mounted there and if the catamaran was used it meant that the nuke (or conventional bomb load) could not be carried. That said it's quite surprising you see it in so many pictures of the Starfighter.
Nice job 21c!

Cool! You got one well before me. Who said that Canadians are snubbed in the XD world? Just kidding, I know you are out in left field.....
Did Starfighters use Genie rockets for nukes?? The missle might of been too big. I know that F-101's used them.....

To answer you Ski....the F-104 could carry one Mk. 28 or Mk. 43 tactical nuclear weapon (bomb) on its center pylon.
Here is a listing of all the nuclear weapons in SAC service:

Here's a photo of the Mk. 28, which is most likely what would have been carried by F-104's during any attack on Cuba:
