Airplane Stands
Airplane Stands
I really liked the clear airplane stands 21st used at ComicCon, and could easily use ten or so of them. I spoke with Zach about the availability of these stands for purchase, and, as most of us probably know, they aren't for sale.
SO, instead of posting this in the ComicCon thread where it might get lost, this is a plea/reqeust/suggestion/whatever to 21st to make these (or similar) 1:18 (and 1:32) stands available for purchase.
It's not like I am asking for a Zero or anything...

I'm with you. Those stands look great. I had asked about these as well, and received the following reply:
There seems to be some legit interest in those stands. I know that they were done just for the show but I think there is some real interest for them.
I will have to bring it up with 21st and see what the deal is. I think based on fan reaction it is something that could be done and sold through the Fan Club at least to start.

Let's not hold tk0211 to anything here about what 21st might do, but at least there might be hope that the sale of stands would be discussed.

airplane stands
A good suggestion. I'll vote for the stands if they are offered.

Stands sound great, helping to display planes above say a ground vehicle, or even above another plane on shelf level.
I'm probably asking for too much.
Maybe...., on second thought..., forget it. I have too much on my collecting plate to start thinking about collecting your planes

Having assembled quite a few of those stands, then putting planes on them, I can honestly say that they seem pretty practical. Here are some points I'd mention on them:
1. Perfectly cut and clean acrylic.
2. Well designed with drillouts simulating bulkheads.
3. Nice lines and angles, that lend themselves well to the effect of the aircraft "flying".
4. Assemble/disassemble easily, and provide a sturdy base.
5. The only "con" I can think of, is that these have no attachment system. The aircraft simply sit/balance on three contact points in the "leveled off" mode. Some aircraft models are better suited to this than others. A solution would be a small dab of hotglue or other non-permanent adhesive to each point.
Overall, I think they'd be an asset to anyone wanting to display their aircraft. You'd just need to figure out a better way of securing the aircraft to the stand. Should be easy enough.

cool
Interesting there is so much interest in these and there was not so much in the big display stands they were thinking about making available.
My question is how much space do they really save or is that not the point? I really don't know the answer and am wondering. As TTT said I guess you could put a ground vehicle tight against the stand but it seems you still need a ton of display space to have multiple planes even on stands - unless of course the stands had adjustable height then you could stagger the AC and get more in a tighter area...sorry thinking while I type....I better get some coffee
PS - Can they hold P-47s, and the larger birds?

As you suggest, it's not really the point of the stands for space savings (for me, at least). I like the option of displaying the planes on a desktop, and at various dive and climb angles. My question is how much space do they really save or is that not the point? I make a wall stand for my Pappy's Corsair. The plane sits on a well rounded off triangular-shaped piece of plywood (painted black). The plywood is mounted on 'lazy susan' style turntable hardware, which itself is mounted on a bracket attached to the wall. I like the display because it's something a little different, and you can rotate the plane 360 degrees to view it from all angles.
Laughinggravy2 confirmed my 'fear' about the stands in that the planes are not secured. That would not stop me from buying them, but I'd definitly make sure the the planes were secure (living in earthquake country always has one thinking about how things can get damaged by a shaker. BTW, my Corsair is secured to the plywood with fishing line around each wheel ).

Got photos of the plexi-stands
I went ahead and hosted these images for everyone's convenience...
Hang tight on the 10 plane display. I put 3 of them together for my collection. They hold 30 planes in a 3' x 9' space in my house.
These are so cool and I think 21st is about ready to see what interest is there on them. You perfer black or silver? That will be the next question! I am going to haul them up to my office and take some detailed photos there for 21st!
They are soooo cool!

The small ones would be clear. Its the larger 1:18 scale plane holder I was talking about. These are aluminum, they hold 10 airplanes anything from a P-38 to a 109. They stand roughly 6 feet tall. and take up less about 2' x 2' of floor space.
The one question is would people want them in a powder coated black or a natural silver. (detailed pics will appear on Area 21 sometime next week) I think we are going to do an article specifically for them to see what the interest level may be. I already own 3 from the first prototype batch.
