1/18 guns for helicopters

Post by gburch » Thu Aug 13, 2009 4:16 am

Having picked up a number of CHEAP AH-6s, I'm looking to do some custom work on them. One thing I'd like to do is a couple of different gun installations. But I'm having a couple of issues.

First, most sources say that a mini-gun is standard armament for Little Birds. For instance, see the "Armament" section of the Wikipedia entry here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MH-6_Littl ... .28MH-6.29

But I haven't found a single picture of a Little Bird carrying a mini-gun, despite some fairly diligent searching. What's up with that?

Second, I have seen ONE pic (which I can't find now) of a three-barrel gun. Anyone know what that is?

Finally, anyone know if there's a source for 1/18 miniguns and/or other appropriate guns for this use, or is this something I'm going to have to make on my own?

I actually knew about that, but thought you would have sold them all with the Blackhawk kits. Got some?

There was an extensive thread with AH-6 pictures on here a while back (several months ago), but couldn't locate it after a few minutes of searching. Here's a picture I had left over from photobucket from that thread:

The most common configuration seems to be with the 2 2.75" rocket pods on the outside and two of the miniguns on the inside. The armament listed off Federation of American Scientists is below:
Armament 2 - M134 7.62-mm 6x barrel, Gatling type twin MG pods
2 - M260 2.75-in Hydra 70 rocket pods (7 or 12 each)
2 - .50 cal MG pods
2 - M75 40-mm grenade launchers
2 - MK19 40-mm grenade launcher
2 - TOW missile pods (2 each)
2 - Hellfire ATGM
2 - Stinger AAM Most Probable Armament
MD-500MD/Scout Defender: Fitted with guns, rockets, grenade launchers, or a combination on 2x fuselage hardpoints.
MD-500MD/TOW Defender: Twin TOW missile pods on 2x fuselage hardpoints; mounts missile sight in lower-left front windshield.

I've seen a picture of the 3 barrel gun you mentioned but can't remember the name of it and it isn't listed above (definitely not the .50 cals).
PM member Tambo, he's an instructor at the 160th SOAR and could tell you what it is I'm sure.

EDIT just found the 3 barrell - it's a M197 20mm three-barrel Gatling Gun.

I think the 3 barreled gun is a GAU/19A .50 cal

but it could be the 20mm as well.
