Avenger markings

Post by JimBob55 » Thu Jul 14, 2005 6:56 pm

Thought I'd post this as a new thread since it is not really Comic Con.

I just found this link to some more information on the Flight 19 aircraft and markings. Looks well researched. All four TBM-1C BuNo's match the Accurate Miniatures, but there is a mismatch with the corresponding A/C numbers.

Very interesting article JimBob. I've been facinated by Flight 19 and the idea of having a 1/18th scale replica of Charles Taylor's FT-28 gracing my room really makes me estatic!!!

I went nuts when I saw Close Encounters for the first time as a kid in the movies. The last thing I expected was to see some Avengers! That scene was really well done and got the goose bumps going....

Just an FYI for anyone interested in the historical accuracy and general information on Flight 19. Go to www.flight19appreciationgroup.org This is the group that has done all the research and checked all the facts.

Roy told me the other day that this group has been heavily involved in historical accuracy of each of the 5 Flight 19 Avengers that 21st is producing, and based on the latest research all 5 Avengers are painted in the correct historical markings.

Hey tko has Roy or anyone from 21st mentioned what paint schemes they are going to be putting on their new tool Mustangs? I saw the box for BBD on the Area 21 website but I wasnt sure about it.

As for the Avenger markings I hope the put a paint scheme from the Battle Of Midway Avengers on them.

21st is keeping the paint schemes for the new P-51's top secret for now. But yes you are correct that there was a concept box for Big Beautiful Doll at Comic Con. It would make sense to me to re do BBD in the new mold. It is such a striking scheme and there is a huge thirst for it in the main stream market. So I would bet there is a good chance we will see it. As for others... Well I know of only one other scheme that is for sure going to be produced but I can't let the cat out of the bag just yet. But It is a pretty scheme.

As for the avenger... The S1 will be Atlantic scheme, S2 is Flight 19, and S3 is a pacific Tri-tone. S3 is featured on the back of the Special Edition Box for the German F-104 that was being sold at Comic Con. The other schemes are still unknown.

Good info, tko211, thanks.

21st (and it's distributors) should offer a bundled i.e. discounted price for Flight 19, for those folks who are willing to buy all 5 at once.

As soon as I find one I'm gonna do it in non-spec. :D

At first, I was disappointed when 21st announced many, many, many months ago  that it was doing an Avenger and had the Atlantic scheme as an example on the website. Since then, they've confirmed that they are doing the S1 as Atlantic. And the more I think about it, the more I like it. I had been indoctrinated over the years to associate Avengers with the Pacific*. But now I've learned something new about their key role in the Atlantic. This is why this hobby is great!

*just like when I was younger I only thought there was one WWII Army Air Force...the "Mighty Eighth". Boy was I wrong, and shame on the many publications that focus only on the 8th and not those in Italy and the Pacific.

WOW! I just finished reading through the above site. What a tragedy. Being in the cockpit has new meaning to me.

I remember seeing something on the Discovery or History channel about Flight 19. I think they were attempting a dive where they thought Flight 19 would have ditched, but came up empty handed unfortunately.
I look forward to the day that FLIGHT 19 is found. The infamous bermuda triangle. Amazing

Thanks for the link TKO211, that is a very interesting website. I had never heard of flight 19 before.

The atlantic scheme looks very good, can't wait for it to be released.

Never heard of Flight 19 before?!? Have you ever seen the Steven Spielberg sci-fi classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"? It begins with investigators finding all the Flight 19 Avengers in perfect shape during a sandstorm in Mexico. (They were dropped off by the aliens that supposedly abducted them in the film.) Its a rather creepy beginning...

Avenger markings

Post by JimBob55 » Sun Jul 31, 2005 7:46 pm

Great link, TKO. I just got back from vacation and saw the information on this thread. Very good information on Flight 19... I hadn't come up with that one on my searches.

Looking forward to all three versions of the Avenger. Wonder if one of the new "Legends series" may be a Bush Avenger?? While maybe not a good choice for a WalMart offering, may be okay for a limited edition. I'd get one.

TKO's link was a great read. I had known the basics of the story, (knew planes went down, but never what or how) but never looked into it before. killed a good chunk of my morning reading the information, and radio transcript on that site. I wasnt really lookin that forward to the avenger, but now i kindof want one.
