Whats the opinion of the Sherman guys?

Post by hotrodrock » Fri Jul 31, 2009 8:07 am

Okay, okay, its 1/16. I just keep saying that when something new (not a repaint) comes out in 1/18 I will get it. In the meantime, I have to feed my jones for some kind of armor. This is in the "coming soon" area of several sites. Its RC. Just wanted to hear what you Sherman guys thought of it.

Well, it is a later-model HVSS Sherman with the 76mm gun. Can't say whether this type had the cast or welded hull as I've seen examples of both and there were many, many Sherman variants...

This is a cast hull version, called the A1. If and when it ever does get released I'll get it just for the drive train, tracks and suspension and graph it onto my Tamiya hull for a project I have wanted to do.

There are way too many 'goofy' inaccuracies for me on this one.

Thats what I'm looking for. What are some of the inaccuracies? The barrel doesn't look right. Thought the barrels that long had some kind of muzzle brake on them. And it is kind of like some of the 1/18 announcements, it was first shown as "coming soon" about 8 months ago. But Heng Long and Matarro usually follow thru with such announcements.

Yes indeed it is  Going to bed at 1am, getting up at 6am, and then going to work make for easy Sherman misidentification...

Well, the most glaring issue is the transmission cover. It extends way too far forward of the tracks, most likely from the gearbox they are using. All of the detail items are way too thick and those would have to be replaced with an aftermarket set. The barrel is too long and big in diameter, probably because of the air-soft gun. This version did not carry a muzzle brake. From a distance even the VVSS looks too big, kinda toy-like but it's probably that way to actually be functional for there are many moving parts to the vertical volute.

Everything on the turret is toy-like and even the tow cable and the cable guides are wrong and inaccurate. Just do a google search alone on this tank (M4A1 76W) and you'll see what I mean. But, these could just be the preliminary photos and not the actual tank they are shipping out so let's hope it's only the prototype.

Anyway you look at it, it's the first VVSS Sherman to be released so if you're a rivet counter and want it right ... that's why I'm getting it for just the suspension for I will either use it to build an M36B1 or the M4A3E2, or both!
