New 1/18 Vehicle idea

Post by dandaman » Thu Jun 25, 2009 3:16 pm

You know what would be cool? A 1/18 scale beat-up pickup truck with a mounted machine gun. For insurgents, militias, and special forces units.

Now I would buy a lot of those. Comments?

That's an easy one. Just give a 1/18 scale pickup truck to a 5 year old armed with a small hammer and there you have it - a beat up old truck!!!!

Post by dandaman » Thu Jun 25, 2009 3:26 pm

Sorry dude, sorry...

I just had never considered the option of buying a new one and beating it up.

Anybody know what year/model the militias are using these days?

No problem. It will be funny to see people dropping in and seeing their disappointment, hehehehe..

Well then, let's make it interesting for them. Check this out. It's a book about gun trucks.

I'm really surprised, I checked my 1/18 diecast car sites and didn't see any nissan/datsun or toyota pickups.

Those are the ones I have been searching for, for a long time, you can get old 30's and 40's trucks by the ton but no 70' to 80's trucks. There are newer dodges and fords though.

This was discussed not too long ago. Get a 1:18 scale older model Land Rover. Older Land Rovers are fairly common in the 3rd world. A company called Eagle Collectibles made some in 1:18 scale. Here's the previous thread: viewtopic.php?t=16530

Land Rovers

I dunno. Land rovers just seem too "safari" to me. Maybe if I was doing a sub-Saharan diorama...

I dunno, every time I watch the news it's a bunch of Taliban or Iraqies in the back of a Toyota pickup. Usually from the 90's and they have 4 doors.

Its actually interesting to me what cars/trucks do make it into diecast.

Plenty of Volvo trucks but very few wagons or sedans. Other vehicles that seem very ubiquitous but no models to represent them.

There aren't a whole lot of alternatives. Japanese trucks from the 70s-90s would be ideal but Land Rovers are occasionally used in some places. Until someone makes Japanese pickups in 1:18 a Land Rover might be a good alternative depending on the location. They were certainly used in Somalia. Here's a pic of a Land Rover Technical in Mogadishu:

Do an eBay search for "1:18 truck" or "1:18 pickup" and you'll get a good idea of what's available. I don't think a 55 Chevy or a 2003 F150 would be good choices. BTW if you can find one of the Eagle Collectibles Series III Land Rovers it would also make a good base for a 70s-80s British military vehicle.

If it absolutely has to be a Toyota there is a 1992 Land Cruiser available. It would take a lot of work but with the top removed, the rear seats removed and a paint job it might look good. Do an eBay search for "1:18 Land Cruiser" and some will turn up.

There is also this truck. It is an Asian version of the Ranger. Has a different front shape then the US version has. The Diecast isn't easy to find though.

When I was in Japan in 1986 they had the 4 door version of the 2 door datsun king cab I had at home.

Don't know why diecast make what they make, licensing has a lot to do with in. AutoArt is coming out with Porsche 914 a car I've always wanted to get and fix up.
A ex worker asked me to find a diecast 86 camaro... not to be had in 1/18
