newbie question

Post by Pa Deuce » Tue May 19, 2009 11:57 am

Forgive me if this is old hat or belongs in the customs section - but has anyone ever made accurate landing gear parts for the 21st century P-51D second release? - similar to what is seen in the box art for Lt. Brown's Bunnie?

No. Believe it or not, the gear on the 2nd edition P-51s are the most accurate as they sit like they should with a forward slant. Both bbi P-51s and the 1st series P-51 gears sit too vertical. The forward slant to the gear was a big issue with collectors, and Roy went ahead and created a bit of "slop" in the gear when he created the new Mustang to ensure it would sit right.

I think that was done due to the depth of the wheel well. There were quite a few limitations on the gears. That is why the P-47 sits so low. The original plane had struts that compressed while retracting. Well, you couldn't do that on a $40 plane, so the plane sits too low.

I'm not explaining that well I think - I understand the struts are extended to fit into the wheel well as they would when uncompressed, while the gear was down and the aircraft in the air - and I realize the tire isn't scale in order to fit into the model's wing - I'm asking if anyone created their own replacement "kitbash" landing gear - how it would appear on the ground with the struts compressed

Hmm... not sure on that one. Kitbashed landing gear for the 21c P-51 doesn't ring a bell as far as I remember. There were boardmembers that removed the tires on some planes and replaced them with others that were "fatter" for the correct look. They did this on the Corsairs, Avengers, and Hellcats. As far as completely replacing the strut, I'm not sure anyone has done that.
