21st Century Toys 1/18 Tiger I Camo (Red 326) Figure

Post by spitfire2021 » Fri Apr 03, 2009 2:17 pm

Early this afternoon ( April 3,2009) PST-- MD had the price of the Tiger I Camo at $39.95! By the time I ordered 2 they were up to 49.95. My son ordered 2 shortly thereafter and it was 59.95. In just a matter of seconds! Now I see they have settled in at 79.95. WOW!

Yes, I just noticed it up on their site now! Too bad I missed the $39.95 price. Would have gone for it.

All versions of the 21c Tiger usually ran around $60 when first at TRU in 2002 and later at small retailers until a couple years ago. The gray and winter versions also appeared for $40 at Wal Mart in the 2004-2005 timeframe. While $80 is certainly an increase in price, the tank is still worth it at that cost. Much more so, in my opinion, than was the S4 Panther tank.

For those members new to the hobby that have not gotten this tank, the 21c Tiger does have some inaccuracies that "rivet-counters" may gripe about, blending features of mid and late production Tiger Is. However, the model is still one of the best tanks in the XD lineup all around - and it is a 7 year old design! Not only is the tank large, but it has a full interior, detailed engine, lots of moving parts and opening hatches. The interior features the gun breach, crew seats, stowed ammo rounds, spent shell casings, jerrycans, haversacks, and even the barrel and breach for the turret MG. You can enclose a full crew of XD German tanker figures in it, which in itself is a neat feature!

In short, the XD Tiger is well worth the price, even for $80 8)

I have the Series 1 Gray Tiger. Is there anything different or special about this tank besides the paint from the Series 1?

Certainly if you have the diecast upper hull Tiger. There was a similar release that had the same paint but with sorta-kinda weathering(including a slightly different elephant battalion emblem), and a fully plastic hull.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.

When did this originally retail?

Wondering if it might mean seeing some Super Cobras go up on MD.

[+] > I've got all the die-cast Tigers w/ the exception of the Eastern Front Tiger ,.. and have the exact Elephant marking painted on them , including the "winter" one.

* I have two of these Eastern Front Tigers . One I bought from "kevrut" for $20.00 MIB , a couple a yrs. ago , because BadCat sent him one by mistake and didn't charge him . Sold it to the "toyktdlgh" about 2-1/2 yrs. ago for $30.00 and just bought it back recently for $30.00 .

......... the other I got from "raiderad6" for about $50.00 MIB , I can't remember exactly because I bought some other stuff.

......... but anyway ,.. I don't know why these are so high. I don't consider it rare or HTF. I don't know what the "big deal" about this particular tank is. As a matter of fact , the paint scheme looks as if a 10-yr. old painted it. I guess cause it was never sold in stores , retail. An On-Line Exclusive Only or something.

The Eastern Front Camo Tiger I was at TRU around 2003 or so. I remember looking at one and passing on it, 'cause it just looked so yellow. Thinking about one now, though.

I have a plastic hulled Tiger that is nearly identical to the diecast hulled S-1. This was purchased off of eBay under the mistaken impression that it was also a diecast hulled Tiger(I didn't realize that there were two materials for basically the same paint scheme). All of the markings on the plastic Tiger received some sort of black wash, and the elephant emblem is slightly different between the two(looks more like a fat aardvark on the plastic Tiger).

I believe the 21C boxed S-1 was the plastic variant.

Edit: Based on photo reference on eBay, it appears that both diecast and plastic variants were shipped in the 21C packaging.

Here's a photo of a plastic Tiger that I pulled from a completed auction. You should be able to see the factory applied wash and note the difference between elephants.
