1/16
Hi Stuka, the Panzer 111 is just under 20mm longer and higher than the 21st mark 1V. Side by side there is nothing in it, but the real test will come when I get the 1/16 Panzer1V and compare with its counterpart. The Tiger 1 compared to 21st Tiger, is 50mm longer, 30mm wider and 20 mm higher, side by side it is obviously bigger, but the figures still look fine and the tank commanders, broken at the waist, look like the real deal in the top hatch of each KT, Tiger and 111 in 1/16.

Here's a pic of the 21st Panzer IV and the new Heng Long Stug III side by side, the Stug is essentially a Panzer III without the turret. Yes, the 1/16th is noticeably bigger but I think the 1/18 scale Dragon trooper fits in there quite nicely. For anyone who's interested, the "R2D2" looking thingy in the Stug commanders hatch is the Infrared battle system sensor/receiver. Click pic to enlarge...

Like you, I think it's probably best not to mix 1/16 scale tanks with 1/18 tanks. The 1/18 figures and accessories are another matter, by and large most seem to work quite well with 1/16 from what I've seen. I just got that Stug in yesterday, and I'll try to post some pictures of it with some XD riders, maybe some 1/18 scale scenery and accessories, and my overall impression of it, as my time permits tomorrow.aferguson wrote:wow......it looks like a jagdpanther beside the panzer iv.

1:16 TANKS
It is tempting to switch over but for right now I will stick with 1:18 tanks. Also do they make a 1:16 German halftrack? Sometimes I think the 1:18 German halftracks by 21st century toys are a little small and not up to scale. At an reenactment I ridden in a real 251 halftrack and when I was comparing a 1:18 figure to the 1:18 German Halftrack it seemed a little small, like the side walls are not high enough and the vehicle was not wide enough. Maybe it is just me. Does anyone else feel this way?
Do they make a 1:16 German Halftrack
I found some pics of real German halftracks at a reenactment on the east coast. There are soldiers around them as well:

Not just yet, but stay tuned... the word at RCU is that 2009 is going to bring us some all new 1/16 scale models including (possibly) a German Halftrack. A 1/16 Sherman is just months away, and I'm hoping it could be ready for the North American market by Xmas. For what it's worth, many of the guys who do IR battles in 1/16th scale use XD figures, scenery, and vehicles like jeeps and halftarcks as static "props", and I can tell you from personal experience they look and fit in with the 1/16 stuff great.. I don't want to rain on the XD parade, because I'll never completely stop collecting it, but it certainly does appear as though 1/16 RC is growing steadily while 1/18 armor is dying a slow death...Also do they make a 1:16 German halftrack?

Agreed. The only exception i've made to this rule is the T-34. It was just such an important tank i have to have some in my collection. It doesn't look all that bad with figures in the driver's hatch and cupola but is still obviously big. I figure it has the look of a T-34 but has the size of a KV-1 or JS2. Sort of kills two birds with one stone.
I may make a similar exception for the way big Junkers 88 i posted in another thread, for similar reasons. It was just such an important plane. Also, i find you can get away with off-scaleness more with planes than with armour, since there isn't such a strong impression of relative sizes with planes because they're normally off flying by themselves, without other planes and figures in close proximity, unlike armoured vehicles.

1/16
All my extensive range of 1/18 go with my now 16 r/c tanks in 1/16 scale, except of course my corresponding 1/18 tanks which I am slowly selling and will reduce to around 20 of my favourites including customs. These 20 I must say only involve 4 different tanks that 21st Century produced and I already have 7 different tanks from Matorro and Henglong. I have plently of 1/18 tankers that look fine riding in the 1/16 tanks, but most only fit after removing the lower leg from the knee down.

If I can get good prices on my 1:18 tanks, I think I'm pretty well ready to move onto 1:16 armor.
I have 2 Tiger I's (metal, and plastic), 2 different Panzer models, 1 (1st series) Panther, a BBI and 2 21st Shermans, 1 BBI Abrams, 1 BBI LAV, 1 Bradley (metal).
It's a lot of armor to unload... But 1:16 just looks 100x better in terms of quality and it's functional to boot... If they sold wireless kits you could gut and put itneriors into, I'd be 100% sold and buying right now.

Bingo! Although I'm willing to make exceptions for your kits.pickelhaube wrote:Most of the 1/16 stuff out now you have to build. Isn't that the allure of 1/18 scale ? You don't have to build it.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.

I like both 1/18 and 1/16. I have all the 1/18 armor 21st ever made and don't intend to get rid of it. The allure of the majority of 1/16 is R/C. I don't do dio's so the size issue isn't an issue with me. 1/18 figs look ok in 1/16 turrets to me as well. Sometimes I'll go with a Tamiya kit if it's a deal but mainly I prefer the prebuilt ready to go versions. Safe to say 1/16 is likely the future of armor especially if the primary 1/18 provider, 21st, in fact goes under.

Since I never was a fan of 1/18 figs due to visible articulation of joints, I have been slowly adding 1/16 vehicles and slowly unboxing 1/6 figs I have collected for years and unboxing and buying 1/6 vehicles to fill the gap 21C 1/18 has left in the TTT house.
If we get a new 1/18 manufacturer for vehicles stepping up to the plate..... I'm there.

well as for myself, i'm giving it til christmas of this year for something to happen; FOV doing some NEW releases, somebody new stepping up etc.
After that, i'm going to start switching over to 1/16 tanks and they'll be no goin' back once i do.
I suspect FOV will release nothing new and nobody new will step up. Even 21, which was the central force of 1/18 armour was very luke warm about making new things. It took them 2 1/2 years to develop the KT and it never did make it to production before their demise.
1/16 on the other hand has a fine selection now and a very bright future with probably 2 or 3 intersting new releases per year possible.
