Why so many 262 Nightfighters?
Why so many 262 Nightfighters?
I was wondering why Monkey Depot has so many 21st Century ME262 Nightfighters to sell, and none of the Yellow 7 standard 262 fighter. You know they made just as many of the Yellow 7s as the Nightfighters. Maybe we will see these also at Monkey Depot as we are now seeing more of the Fight 19 Avengers.

I'm not so sure that an equal number of standard 262s and nightfighter 262s were made. Judging by the relative unavailability of the standard 262s at the other etailers, my guess is that less of them were made. I think one of the etailers pointed out that the only items appearing at Monkey Depot were items that were listed as currently available from 21st before the MD sale began. Thus, 21st may be out of standard 262s.
Also, the nightfighter 262 may have been more of a one-time, "let's make a lot of them" run due to the limited number of repaint possibilities. The Yellow 7, on the other hand, may have been a limited run with alternate paint schemes coming in the future.
Could anyone refresh my recollection as to when the nightfighter 262 was released as compared to the Admiral 262 and 21st's Yellow 7? As I recall, I think Admiral was first with their standard 262, then 21st's with the nightfighter 262, followed by 21st's yellow 7? If that's the case, such sequence of events may also have had something to do with the production numbers on the Yellow 7.

The "Yellow 7" Me-262 has already come and gone at Monkey Depot. A member emailed them and asked if they would be restocked and was told "no".
Now, with stuff magically reappearing, that may be true or it may not.
Just keep checking the site and see.

Typically injection mold dies can be modified to change the design. My thought is 21C may have run their S1 and then modified the mold to make the two seat version. This takes some time and expense and they may have run plenty of two seat versions and never changed the mold back to the single seat.

As I recall, TKO said the original Me-262 was designed to be converted from one seat to two with just a minimal change of parts.olifant wrote:Typically injection mold dies can be modified to change the design. You are right Harry that this is much easier and cheaper than building two molds, but it still isn't like popping a part out and another in. For big molds like this they are probably being run on a 1000 ton injection molder. That is some pretty serious pressure...hworth18 wrote:As I recall, TKO said the original Me-262 was designed to be converted from one seat to two with just a minimal change of parts.olifant wrote:Typically injection mold dies can be modified to change the design. I got a few of the nightfighters. One of my cases says 265 of 750. There are 4 planes to a case so it looks like there are 3000 of them out there.
Here are some other case #'s
Seeman 282 @ 4 per case = 1128
Panther 1500 @ 2 per case = 3000
Flak 88 1000@ 4 per case = 4000
Patton Tank 1000 @ 2 per case = 2000
WC-51 weapon carrier 200@ 4 per case =800

I think I found one of the last places to have the Me-262 Yellow 7 in stock.

The only problem is I can't seem to find a price for it.

What with the Citigroup/US government merger, maybe there will be some program to allow you to redeem your Citi Rewards miles for the real Yellow 7 or assorted other military "collectibles"...

it's possible that because AT's single seat 262 had been available for some time before 21c released theirs, that they figured demand would be less and made less of them; or it could just be that since they have been out longer and perhaps more popular they are pretty much sold out while the nightfighter version remains.
If 21c can pull through i'm sure we'll see lots of repaints of the 262 single seater.....they owe us a sturmvogel version, if nothing else.
Not so sure there would be a repaint of the nightfighter version though...this may be the one and only. Luckily it's a beauty.

I received mine from aikens last night- 74.00-no shipping- now the remaining few are retailling at 119.00. It's got the usual gaps below the canopy on the hinged side, just like the ones I saw at hobby town months and months ago. Has anyone filled these gaps in the upper body? and if so, is there and off the shelf paint offered that will match up pretty well?
Tinman, sorry if I sounded a wee bit ornery at your enthusiasm about Aikens yellow 7 availability, but not experiancing your joy firsthand was more than one without could bear..

Hey, no problem! Mine arrived late last week, and it looks great. I'm really glad I got it, especially since the price went way up after that. The Yellow 7 and the Night Fighter are almost completely different aircraft. Great having both.
