Panzer IV RC - New Version

Post by CENT-ONE » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:24 am

So we've seen the 21st version, the Motorworks version, the New Millennium Toys version, and now whatever the hell this is "Tanks of War" version in what looks to be NATO woodland camo... :?:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-18-Tanks-of-War-C ... 240%3A1318

Anyone else seen this before or is it old news that I missed the first time around?

I'm gonna cut it up and re-paint it for the wirbel kit anyway so we'll see.

Good news if this is a new release of some sort. :D

EDIT: ok, looks like it's been around for a bit. Has some random quasi-skirts on it but otherwise looks like a decent base for customizing. It'd be nice to find a stack of these at the big-lots or discount store. Here's some better pics from a german ebay auction.

A few months ago, you could find 40-50 of these things every day on ebay. Can't recall offhand what the price was. For some reason, theres not that many anymore. Except for the fenders, it reasonably looks like a Panzer.

21C PzIVs are not easily found these days so I picked one of these up about six months ago. Must replace MG and eliminate overhang off the tread cover running board but otherwise looks good. No opening hatches but for the $40 shipped I paid I was happy with it.

Centone, thanks for the intel.......Ive been looking for a few of these ever since 21st's Panzer IV's dried up. Just don't think I want to buy from this seller, not liking the attitude.

Well, I think the scheme and the addition of the fenders completely turn me off to something like this...

yeah but for a customs base it's great, cut the fenders off an it'll be getting repainted anyway. I'd be interested in tracking down the US distributor on these just to see how cheap they could be purchased.

Cent, I ordered one about two weeks back for my pickelwirbel as well. Still waiting on it to arrive, but I agree that its a great base for a custom vs. chopping up a rare 21C panzer IV.

I won't know for sure until it gets here, but from the photos its pretty clear these are from the 21C mold.

thanks for the info digimatt! :D

Wonder how much wholesale is on these for a case or so? Might be worth it since it looks like there's lots of nice kits being made to go on the base.

grunt1, has yours arrived yet? any reviews?

Thanks for the link Digimatt, these would be great for custom projects. I just wish 21st made a ton more of their Panzer IV's or........ sold more of them in the North East, all of mine are from Bad Cat on the left coast.
Grunt, let us know what you think of this tank, I'd like a few to cut up for Pickelhaube and Woofer/Huns custom kits.

I know I am still going to do the Hummel and Brumbar and need more Mk IVs. Let us know how it looks .

Well, I've sent them an email regarding US distributor and import cost/quantity so hopefully they'll get back to me with some info. I'd think wholesale on these must be $20 or less depending on volume. If it looks workable when grunt1 or myself get theirs in hand then it might be worth ordering a quantity if the price is right.

Here is the one I bought after some paint. I was too lazy to cut off the mud flaps but this would be wonderful for Picklewirble, Hummel or other MkIV customs.

Not yet, they are giving me some grief about not having that color in stock anymore. Not sure if they mean color, or the panzer iv (and are trying to ship me the M1 instead). I'll let you know..

well the one I got off ebay last week finally showed up so I thought I'd give it a brief review.
It's definitely not using the exact tooling of the 21st version, looks like they did a 3-D scan of it and simplified all the moving parts and panel lines. It's nowhere near as detailed and crisp as 21st. The fenders are a bit wider and the no-slip pattern is different, and of course there are those lovely fender skirts that need to be cut off.

Since I'm planning to cut this up, gut the RC, remove the turret, and repaint it for the wirbel custom kit the loss of detail doesn't really matter too much since I'll be able to add some of it back in as I build.

I think I paid just under $60 for this one shipped. With 21st Panzer IV prices being as high as they are lately this seemed like the best option for a "donor" hull. I wouldn't say it's worth that price, $30 seems reasonable for the quality, but it'll definitely work.

I'll try to get some pics up of the teardown later on.

Centone, Thanks for the review. I'd like to get a few of these. This seems to be the best choice if we want to do custom on a 1:18th Panzer IV. We just need someone to import them into the country.

How do the road wheels and tracks look ? Can you give us some pics of them ? This may be just what everybody needs to do more of the Panzer IV customs that are on the horizon.

road wheels look pretty much like the 21st version, one of my drive sprockets got broken in shipping but the part was there so I can glue it back together. The tracks are decent, a little less detailed than the 21st but they seen to work and look ok. I've uploaded some photos here.
