I think this plane was announced early too, I suspect we will get more information before the year ends.

Heard back from my guy at the LHS today and he claims his source in Japan (works for Tamiya) says he's heard rumblings of a Tomcat and another "modern jet" tooled in 18th scale, but wasn't sure as to details. As far as the Tomcat goes, nothing in a box ready for shelves, but was told if in fact it was accurate, you might be looking at Spring release.

More info as it becomes available.

hm......well if it's a tomcat AND another jet i would say it's not BBI as they have never been so prolific and i doubt they would be now, given times the way they are. So we may indeed have a new player..
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Thanks for the update! Perhaps it is a new player in the game. Anyone else think we will definitely hear more at Toyfair?

An old post I made
VMF115 wrote:Tamiya has be toying with the idea of doing semi assembled aircraft in 1:16 and 1:18 since the late 90’s
I know some one that has a daughter that is married to an executive that works for Tamiya Japan. Says he seen an F-4u Corsair with incredible detail and with working features in 1:18 and 1:16 scale. Also they have wanted to go in to the diorama market for some time. Who knows when they will go in that market?

I also here there is a company that wants to mass-produce those highly detailed metal aircraft and armor in 1:15 scale for the masses not just for the elite and museums. But for every day working folks.

Not to mention the other model companies like Revel/Monogram are also looking in the 1:48 and 1:32 scales.

There really is a big market for these scales and the age demographics are the17-75 years old group.

I bet with in ten years we wont have a problem in finding what we want in 1:18 scale.

I don't think sky works can compete with Tamiya or any model maker IF they went into 1/18th scale pre-built models ...now they could if they move to mas production and had a price point near or under what Tamiya/trumpeter would sell there's at..if they made 1/18th stuff already built

It wouldn't surprise me to see Tamiya turn out to be the one producing the 1/18 F-14. Their 1/32 scale 'Cat model carried the exact markings and is the same model (F-14A) as the photos of the alleged 1/18 bird. It would be easy enough for them to scale up the molds and start popping these things out. Plus, Tamiya is a large enough company to take the risk of venturing into unknown territory with a new product during these unstable economic times.

PRE ASSEMBLED OR KIT ?

Post by supersonicfifi » Tue Dec 16, 2008 8:16 am

Do you think a kit almost finished would be cheaper ? i think so, i remember 2 years ago about some models in 1/48 pre painted ... it was a really easy to assemble & put decals .... to have a nice model.

I think it could be interting for the developpement of new models scaled up from 1/32 ones ... would it be cool to see the scaled up version of the F 105 from trumpeter ?

I keep a sharp eye on this forum because i always thought that the F 14 in its "TOP GUN" or "Jolly Rogers" version would be a huge seller !

I will order one ASAP !

WGP KLAUS:

Do you have any idea about the cost of a Tamiya 1/18 F-14?

(I was going to order a Century Wings 1/72 F-14 in the same paint scheme as the 1/18 F-14 featured in this thread. If in fact Tamiya will release a 1/18 F-14 in the spring, I'd rather have the Tamiya--IF it's affordable)

I contacted Tamiya America, Inc. and they had no idea what I was talking about....they did say it would be cool. They will be looking into it and will report back if they find out anything.

I love that 1/32 Black Lions Tomcat. I'm gonna try to find the link. That diorama is in the entrance to I believe the Tamiya headquarters. The guy who did this model has won many awards at model shows. He's considered one of the best modelers in the world. I'll do what I can to find that link. Someone may beat me to it which is perfectly fine...

That is by far one of the most authentic modeling jobs I have ever seen.
Outstanding.

The information I received wasn't that Tamiya was producing an F14 in 18th scale, but that someone assosciated with Tamiya had heard rumblings of one. If in fact Tamiya were to do one, suffice it to say, it would be quite expensive and all you have to do is look no further than their MasterWorks line of assembled/painted/detailed Armor/Cars/Motorcycles. If they were to get into the 1/18, which I don't think they'd do, safe bet the piece would sell for more than the reported cost of this big bird!

WGP KLAUS:

Thanks for the info. If it's not Tamiya then
three questions remain:

1.Who is releasing the 1/18 F-14?
2. What is the price?
3. When will it be released?

I exchanged a few e-mails with Mr. Aiko Oishi from HWJapan about the 1/18 F-14. He explained that they would not be carrying the F-14 as a regular item for sale.

In other words, the only way that another 1/18 F-14 will be available from them is if somone cancels their Pre-Order......

This news makes this model even more strange. I wonder if this means that the 1,000 units have been sold out? Funny that if there were more left they wouldn't order more to sell since they filled all of their pre-orders and their is still more demand.
