Who makes the non-RC M113?

Post by biglou » Mon Oct 20, 2008 2:35 pm

What company makes the diecast 1/18 M113(with an interior) and what specifically is it called? I've been looking all over but all I can find is the radio controlled version(called the M113A2). I thought the company that made it was 21st Century, but all I can tell they made was the RC version. Was the non-RC version very rare or something, perhaps? Thanks upfront.

No 21st made both first the non R/C then the R/C . Just like the Panzer IV. For some reason the R/C were not as popular as the NONE R/C version in both liveries.

Lou, it's in a Motorworks box. There are pictures here:

OK to clear things up, this is how the M113 production situation works...

There were two types of M113s made: the S1 Non-RC version and the S2 RC version.

They are actually made by a company called New Millennium Toys LTD. This was a subsidiary company of 21c that often made their other diecast vehicles in various scales. Most collectors usually just consider the items as being part of the 21c Ultimate Soldier Xtreme Detail (XD)line, which they were intended to be.

S1 M113
The S1 version of the M113 sold under the Motorworks brand at Wal Mart around late 2004 and early 2005.

It was non-RC, had a diecast metal hull, opening hatches, opening engine, came with two crappy figures, stowage, and had the full interior. It retailed for around $40, but was quickly discounted.

There were two paint schemes: a modern desert tan and an Vietnam version in OD green. Both were the same type of vehicle, which relpicates a later model M-113A2 or M-113A3. The vehicles got good distribution at Wal Mart, but were out in relatively small numbers and never restocked. They never went to the small retailers.

(I only ever found one of the desert tan versions at all six of my local Wal Marts. It was in a trashed box and marked down about 75% to $10 - a good deal  )

S2 M113
The S2 M113 sold at Wal Mart and the small retailers in 2006-2007. It was packaged in a 21c-style box, but under the New Millennium Toys company logo and not Ultimate Soldier XD. Retail price was $50.

This version was RC and came with a remote control. RC features included independent suspension with forward, reverse, turning left & right motions. It also made engine sounds and pressing a button on the control made a machine gun firing noise.

The vehicle's construction was plastic, with the same stowage as the S1 version. Hatches open, but are partially blocked off to protect the electronics inside. No figures were included.

There were two paint schemes: a desert tan version (identical to the S1 M113) and a NATO woodland cammo version. Like the S1 M113, both relpicate a later model M-113A2 or M-113A3.

The S2 RC M113s got very good distribution at Wal Mart, and were restocked at least twice in many areas. They sat around for a while and were eventually discounted in early 2007 to $30 and lower.

Hope all this helps! The RC M113 is fun, but the S1 diecast version is best if you want something to fill with troops. Both vehicles are great for customization
