Switch to 1/16 or stay with 1/18 armour?

Post by aferguson » Sat Aug 23, 2008 12:15 pm

With recent events looking pretty gloomy for 21c and the sputtering releases for 1/18 armour over the years, there has been some talk recently of people switching to collecting 1/16 armour. So i'm curious as to how many are seriously thinking about it, have done it, would never do it etc.

Hence this poll.

I'm considering it for armor not available in 1/18 like a KT or Stug. I wouldn't want to mix Shermans, Tigers, Panthers or the like 1/16 with 1/18.

I'm not going to completely give up collecting XD armor, and I'll almost certainly pick up the 88mm when it comes, and maybe the KT as well, but for me the 1/16 RC armor has added a whole new dimension to my hobby, and a very diverse and satisfying one at that. 8)

I'm considering it. To me, the size thing does not seem to work for some tanks that are a bit smaller in real life. However, for something that is already big, like a Kingtiger, 1:16 might be the way to go. 1:18 armor just really is not reliable these days.

I will probably mix and match--I already do, anyway, with a 1/16 RC Pershing that I have had for a couple years. As far as I am concerned, if it's a subject I really want and it's not out of my price range (which is why I don't have a 1/6 Tiger under glass as a coffee table), I will get it, regardless of scale. Ideally in a scale I already collect, or at close enough, but hell, I broke down and bought the FOV 1/32 Jagdpanther because it was the largest version I could find in my price range (and almost as expensive as an XD version would run, if I recall correctly).

I have 3 FOV King Tigers and 1 Wittman tiger with a T-34/85 thrown in. All 1/16 scale. That is roughly about $1485 worth of stuff. The avarage price of 1/18 is about $60 to $120 now. So my money will be on 1/18 stuff. I think that I will pass on the new 1/16 FOV Sherman. I can't see paying that much for a Shermy. Most of the 1/16 stuff out now you have to build. Isn't that the allure of 1/18 scale ? You don't have to build it.

Actually, most of the the 1/16th tanks now are RC, and pre-painted and pre-built. The price ranges from $70-$150. The only difference between the pricier ones and the cheaper ones is that the pricier ones comes with better eletronics and/or metal tracks.

But if you just want a static model and don't particularly into the RC aspect of the hobby, then those cheaper ones are good buys.

Although the pricier Tamiya kits, you still have to build.

Most everything I have is 1:18, and have collected this scale for years. Whether it's Gi Joe, Star Wars, Ultimate Soldier or BBI. I can't change now and expect to even come close to the amount of toys in this scale.

I have strayed into the 1:32 arena because it's the next prolific for aircraft and armor, and is probably the future of most of the 21'st, BBI offerings.

The range of 1/16 tanks seems to be expanding quickly and I am starting to make my 1/18 figures seemingly ok against them, which they are not quite. I realized along time ago to bring my 1/18 vehicles alive you need the figures all over them, so I am trying to convince myself they fit in with 1/16, which means I will start to collect them, but no longer as a army builder due to the size. Stricting one of each, not like the 40 halftracks I have in 1/18 etc.

Mike, here a few pics for you.... The first two show Dragon 1/18 figures on a WSN 1/16 T-34/85 Russian tank, but figures from 21C or BBI will work just fine as well. Most people here agree that 1/18 figures and accessories go quite well with 1/16 vehicles. The last pic shows the 1/16 T-34 next to an XD Panzer IV, ok.. the T-34/85 is bigger no doubt, but it was a slightly larger tank in real life anyways, and I think the picture illustrates that the size difference is not so glaring that you couldn't display them in a scene together. Most people agree where you run into big problems of size is when trying to display vehicles of the same type together in both scales, ie. 1/16 Tiger and XD Tiger. Hope you find the pics useful. 8) Click the image to enlarge....

the last picture of the t-34 and panzer iv is a bit deceptive. I know Ostketten isn't trying to be tricky, it's just the nature of photographs.

The T-34 is further from the camera and looks smaller than it is. The 1/16 T-34 is about the same size as the xd panther and quite a bit larger looking than the panzer iv, in person. If you're somewhat knowledgeable as to the relative sizes of tanks, it will look pretty glaring.

It's for this reason i am thinking of switching entirely to 1/16 tanks, as i find that mixing 1/16 tanks with 1/18 tanks doesn't work very well, especially when you compare tanks that should be of similar size (this is very much like trying to fit a 1/16 Tiger witn a 1/18 Tiger). As an example, the 1/16 stug III will be larger and quite a bit wider than the 1/18 panzer IV, which was in reality and noticeably bigger vehicle than the stug.

Interestingly, the 1/18 figures work pretty well, largely in part to the fact that most of these figures are a bit on the big side of 1/18 anyway. Also, things like halftracks, artillery (ie the Pak), planes etc also look fine with 1/16 tanks, due to the fact there isn't a strong sense of the relative sizes between these items.

So, the bottom line is, i find that 1/16 tanks just don't go well with 1/18 tanks, but do fit pretty well with everything else, which as i said is why i'm seriously considering switching. It would be ideal to use 1/18 tanks only, of course, but since there is not very many of them and the situation is not likely to improve, using 1/16 tanks instead isn't all that bad of an option.

This is all just my personal opinion of course.....i'm sure many will disagree with me.
