21st Kubel question

Post by King O' Fools » Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:17 pm

Got a 21st Kubel from someone on e-bay and the slits in the headlamps are painted in sky blue. Is this normal (i.e. did 21st actually go for that) or is it just my model that has this, uh, "feature?"

'Cause this is the weirdest thing I could think of, really.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Just pulled out my Kubelwagen and it has the sky-blue slits on the headlamps, so its quite likely that was a production feature. Shouldn't be too hard to fix, however.

It is, overall, a nice little car. Great detail and functionality. If this is your first Kubel, I'd recommend putting either a couple S1 figures in the front seats, or you can remove the lower leg section on the "Battle of the Bulge" style Germans or the new "D-Day" series German figures and fill the vehicle up with riders 8)

Looks 8) with that Panther in the background.

Actually this is my second Kubel. I already have the Minichamps version. But this one is very nicely detailled too (in fact, I'm surprised it is THAT detailed). A real shame they didn't produce a DAK version with the top up.

A real shame too that you have to remove the lower part of the Germans to get them to 'fit' inside.
Something I can't understand from 21C...they make a 1:18 scale figure that can't FIT inside a 21C 1:18 scale vehicle...

Not necessairly... The new D-Day series figures fit in with the lower legs (i.e. the boots) removed, but you can fit two of the first-series German figures in the front seats without any modification, as well as that skinny BoB series German when the overcoat is removed. Otherwise, its a tight squeeze for figures. Guess one has to remember that in reality, humans tend to compress more compactly than do our 1:18 plastic replicas

The Kubel and the Jeep are vehicles 21c sorely needs to revisit, but somewhere around this board I heard that the moulds were destroyed in a fire or something and that's why we haven't seen them again since 200/2001. Perhaps its time for a retooling!

The 1/18 jeeps and Kubel are sorely missed and a re-issue of these vehicles would be greatly appreciated! I never had the opportunity to get the winter jeep to go with the other winter vehicles 21st released and now every time I see one available on-line they are priced well over $30! :(

Ok, you can file this comment under 'nutty ideas from coo-coo land,' but can't these models be reversed-engineered?

Most certainly, but then again, its 21c we're talking about

Agreed. But I guess in the long run new toolings, molds and such would cost a lot more than they estimate their profits from these vehicles? Although Jeeps and Kubels I think would be quick sellers as everyone needs these, including kids. Not to mention even mothers would recognize a jeep and probably buy it for a birthday gift, etc. It's one of those things.

Well, maybe 21st can devise a plan to have a quad mount installed on a Jeep. Just sayin'.

I'd think the reason you don't get them is investment, but I'd also think that 21st would have a LOT of opportunity for re-release... Releases with tops up and down, releases in winter or DAK colors, an SAS modified jeep would look great I think...

Those things are what ultimately would make or break the feasability of remolding them. Compared to the Hano's or tanks, the smaller vehicles were pretty simplistic in design so they're cheaper to tool up, but I'm sure they're still hefty prices in their own right. I'd think the number of variations they could do alone would push 21st to try though. I agree, they're sorely in need of upgrades/new releases.

I'd also think the lower pricepoint on retail shelves would be something that would appeal... They could then consider motorcycles, a Kettenrad, etc. in the same pricerange. Some may be smaller, but with some random accessories thrown in for value comparison, that likely already have mold tools (or perhaps a 2nd figure?), I'd think 21st could easily make a smaller vehicle for the same pricepoint very appealing on retail shelves.

This would be a pricepoint though that you may see armored cars, or a Bren Carrier in... They'd have options beyond Kubelwaggens and Jeeps for certain. Then again, under the new pricing we're seeing, maybe a Jeep would cost you $50.

So I guess these aren't available anymore?

Doing an internet and ebay search, any 1:18 scaled kubelwagens are in the neighborhood of $75 and up!!

I think the last available was the Battle of the Bulge Jeep at TRU... Can't think off-hand of either being available since then. I know the Kubel was never offered since the Series 1... Glad I bought it when I did looking back.

A Desert paintjob with top up was pictured but not produced.

I can't recall, but wasn't a jeep with the top up pictured at one point too?

I only see die-casts of either available, and they're way more than I'd want to spend.
