Roy Sutherland In Air and Space Mag.

Post by donnieboy » Mon Apr 18, 2005 8:07 pm

Don' know if any one's reported this yet.
On page 14 of the April/May 2005 issue of "Air and Space Smithsonian" magazine, there is an article about former Luftwaffe pilot Gunther Rall visiting the new Udvar-Hazy Center outside of Washington, D.C. Presenting him with a 1:18 Bf-109G-6 painted in Major Rall's squadron markings is none other than Roy Sutherland, the Master Modeller of 21st Century Toys. The 109 looks great! Hope 21 C brings out that version for us peons! By the way, the Udvar-Hazy Center is on the grounds of Dulles Airport and has zillions of rare Warbirds! Check it out! :o
Go Starbuck!

Nice article and thanks for the link and picture. It is also good to get some coverage for our hobby, no matter how small. I can't wait for the day I see 21c aircraft listed among the fine desktop models that are advertised in the back of Air & Space.

Here is original coverage of the event. What's interesting is Rall's work on the development of the F-104

Cool!! Way to go Roy! It's neat to see an ace like Rall see that he wasn't forgotten in such a way! What a charactor he is....

Thanks for the link, great find!!

"Ya think Roys 109 will end up on Ebay?"
 It would be funny if Rall was just an ebay hawk
...But I doubt it...what we need to do is push Zach to badger Roy into painting up another few hundred for us hardcore XD addicts :D

I wouldn't put it past his relatives to put it up on Ebay after he's gone.... :(
As far as seeing 21st make more of these.. I seriously doubt it...
Maybe one similar, but I would think that plane is a very "special" piece..

Even if he doesn't know what it would be worth, I'm sure the symbolic importance means a great deal, and I think that as an aircraft lover, he would be quite impressed to see the extraordinary level of detail that accompanies the XD ME-109G! (As evidence for the amazement XD can draw, you should have seen the surprised reaction of the Federal Aviation Administration employees in the Fresno, Ca. office when I brought in my S1 Kepford Corsair to hang in my father's office!)

Ok- this has really peaked my interest!
This has been the week for rare 109's. The funny thing is I remember seeing that exact aircraft months ago while visiting with 21st as we were in the early developing stages of AREA-21. It is nice to get the full story. Thanks for posting it up.

Its a wonder Roy hasn't made any of you Fan Club staff a custom-painted plane, to celebrate your status as the representatives of the 21c fanbase! You deserve it for making that Area21 fansite and giving us the occasional information bombshell :D
