raiderad6 not sure where you are in CA. I hit 2 Wally yesterday in the Bay Area Milpitas 190's and 2 tropical 109's. Union City had an endcap with XD vehicles, Bulldogs, halftracks and 1 German halftrack. In one of the aisles their were Marines and x32 playsets. They also had some 190's and 1/6 vehicles. I finally picked up my Bulldog I'd been eyeing at TRU for the last few years $23.

It looks like the East coast got the goods this time......

Now that I got a MK IV, I gotta say it is really nice. I noticed that it has the "New Millenium Toys" moniker on the bottom. Very interesting.

I went ahead and snapped off the muzzle break to get it in the right position and glued it back on. Having 2 crew members is really cool. I put the second guy in the turret side-hatch and he looks perfect there. Well done 21st! I can't wait to see what is next!

These Panzer IVs are very nice, as to whats next :? hmmm wouldn't a King Tiger or a Jagdtiger be cool in 1/18 ? Check out the pics of the new 1/32nd Tigers at the 1/32 Scale Forum.

That would be darn right AWESOME if the King Tiger and Jagdpanther were in 1/18. I'm hoping that since they are going to be produced in 1/32 scale that the 1/18 types will follow.

I have a question regarding a feature on the XD Panzer IV. What are the compartments on the front glacis of the tank actually used for? [See arrows in picture below.] Are they stowage compartments, some sort of crew access hatch or what? Thanks for your help!

The vented hatches that you've indicated are used to access the brakes. From the picture that I've seen, there is really no room for storage. The vents are those small cylindrical shaped protrusions on the hatches allowing air to enter and cool the brakes.

Makes sense. Thanks for the info! I would guess similar hatches on front glases the 32x Stug IV and Panzer IIIs exist for the same purpose.

The hatches on the Stug IV would be, but the on the PZIII they are crew hatches. The PZIII doesn't have hatches on the top of the hull.

I'm skeptical about the front access doors for the PZIII being hatches for the crew. The PZIII is mechanically similar to the PZIV and the brakes and transmission have to there in the front. I believe that many of the versions of PZIII had crew hatches on the sides of the hull between the upper track return rollers and the boogie wheels.

There is a picture somewhere of a dead PZIII crewman in North Africa with his body halfway out of one of these side hatches. It's not the better known picture of the surrendering crewman exiting from the side turrent hatch. I believe there is also a picture of a dead PZIII crew halfway out of the side turrent hatch.

I would appreciate any confirmation or dissent on this info from other members.

Yes, there is a crew hatch on the side where you describe it. You can see it on this model version here:

I hate to be greedy but I think I want a Panzer III also....

That side door is also faithfully reproduced on the 21c 32x Cold Steel Panzer III. It seems kind of small for anything other than an escape hatch, so my guess would be that the driver and machine gunner used the turret hatches normally, but then again...

The L M AND N models did away with the side escape hatches if I remember correctly. Here is a link to some photos taking from the drivers area of a late model PZ III with single crew hatches.
