next 21st Century repaints?

Post by dragon53 » Wed Apr 02, 2008 7:45 am

For veteran 21st Century experts:

What do you think will be the next 1/18 repaints?

My guesses:
1. Sherman (since a Panther repaint has already been announced)
2. Spitfire (since they're selling for exorbitant ebay prices)
3. P-47D (TKO211 hinted at a P-47)

Tko did hint at a bavarian f-104G.
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!

well aside from the upcoming Rudel Stuka, there is also a P47 that TKO mentioned. That might be if for now.

A desert Spitfire and desert 109F/G (both slightly retooled) would be awesome and i've been expecting to see them for years.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

A Spitfire VC Trop / Vb Trop, and desert 109F/G would be sweet 8)

But I thought desert spitfires had either a Huge ugly fixed air cleaner "Vokes filters" or a temporary one that was jettisoned after take off.

That would be some major retooling for 21st to do.

I don't think the Pz IV mold is available anymore; it looks like it has been modified and used to sell lousy RC models now.

I think if the Spitfire mold was available they would have re-released it by now also.

Sherman? Nah. How many Sherman repaints do we have already? 4? 5? 6? More?

And the Sherman isn't exactly a big seller back in the day.

GOOGLYDOOGLY:

The 21st 1/18 Sherman is a big seller on ebay, so there's still a demand for it---just like 21st's 1/18 Spitfire.

A certain XD item fetching for high prices on Ebay isn't really a good indication whether it's a good candidate to be re-released or not.

Because at one point or another, a lot of XD items have fetched for lots of money on Ebay, just because they weren't in production anymore, and a few people just ended up getting into bidding wars for them.

And since 21st has now decided to choose well which items to release (or re-release), I seriously doubt they will release the Sherman again, considering Shermans (or US armor in general) are not big sellers, compared to their German counterparts.

GOOGLYDOOGLY:

I missed out on the 1/18 Shermans when they were being cleared out---so I'd buy one, but as TKO211 said, he doubts a US Sherman repaint, too. I still wish they'd re-release the 1/18 Sherman considering the alternatives---the BBI 1/18 Sherman with a 105mm, the minimal FOV 1/18 Sherman and the FOV 1/16 Sherman at around $400.
My consolation is a P-47 repaint---most likely Gabreski's.

Dragon, why not pick up a few FOV Shermans for around 15 bucks at Target. I looked high and low for their Tiger I, no luck. FOV's armor may be lacking in detail to a certain extent but for 15-20 bucks and a little work it seems worth it to me.

NORMANDY:

Months ago, I was going to buy an FOV Tiger at Target. After seeing one, I changed my mind. Recently, I lucked out and bought a 21st Century 1/18 Tiger I at Monkeydepot for $34---I thought they were discontinued a long time ago.
I've seen several FOV Shermans at Target and don't want one---I don't have the skill to customize the Sherman. I'm hoping I luck out with a 21st 1/18 Sherman like I did with the Tiger I.

Thats a great price for the Tiger I. I hear you on the customizing, if I see anything on line (21st Shermans) I'll let ya Know.

Dragon, sorry about that. I hope you find an affordable 21st Sherman too.

But don't be too afraid to "customize" if you have to. You could simply buy a cheap FOV Sherman and use its part to convert the BBI Sherman into a 75mm model.

*EDIT* Also, I would recommend that you get an FOV Sherman now, while they're still cheap. Trust me on this. You'll be kicking yourself.

I wish I bought a Cobra back when they were only $40 at Wal Mart. :(

So yeah, learn from our mistake.

GOOGLYDOOGLY:

If I had the skills to customize a tank, I'd do it. Unfortunately, skill-wise, I have trouble getting my planes and tanks out of their boxes---too many plastic ties.

After I saw the $30 FOV 1/18 Tiger at Target, I decided not to buy it---and then lucked out on a $34 21st 1/18 Tiger at Monkeydepot. I hope I have the same luck with the Sherman (I'd really like to luck out and find FOV's new diecast 1/16 Sherman for $34---that tank looked beautiful in the photo I saw. Unfortunately, it's msrp is over $400).

I think there maybe some untis still available from European online retailers. Maybe I can help you find one. How much are you willing to spend?
