A Desert Messerschmitt?

Post by gustav » Mon Apr 11, 2005 5:39 pm

There's a 109 on ebay that I've never seen before. It has a desert pattern and looks pretty sweet. The seller says that the plane is some kind of prototype mistakenly sent to him a few years ago. Any info? If the plane's legit then I am curious to see how high the auction goes.

Sorry, I'd enter the link if I knew how. Maybe someone else can.

Well I'll be damned, he finally decided to sell the thing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW

This is a fully legit listing. The seller has been a long time poster here and did indeed get the prototype you see in the listing..... It was accidentally sent to him when he put in an order with the fan club. It's on top of the rarest XD list, that's for sure. This oughta be interesting!!!

Thanks for the heads up. This is a rather historic event for us long-time XD collectors.....

I was just looking at that awhile ago! My first thought was it must be a custom, but wow, its real? Well, seeing as how the Spinach Me-109 has been geting around a $100, this one should fetch a fair price. I'd bid on it but I've been spending too much on XD recently, gotta cut back. At least until my next paycheck, anyway :P

Wow, a one of a kind! Maybe I should go bid on it now while its still under a hundred bucks just to say I did. After that I'll just watch from the sidelines while things get out of hand.

I think its a great paint scheme though. It may be better than the released tropical version. Maybe 21st will release it in the future?

Patriot68 owns it. A great guy from GP's old board. He's only posted on this board once or twice i think. It's fully ligit for sure though i'm not sure that the scheme is accurate for a 109E. I bet it goes for hundreds...

Cool! I do remember this coming up when another board member found that Cezch Spitfire. I like that 109 scheme and its a good one for 21c's 109G. The plane in the auction even has the origional small pilot. To quote another post, this will deffinitely be interesting, especially if the coming bidders know their stuff!!

Spinach 109

Post by tankduel » Mon Apr 11, 2005 8:44 pm

Can someone please tell me why the Spinach 109 is so hard /expensive to come by? Obviously ,production numbers were lower than usual, was it
an exclusive /limited edition release or a fan club offer? Any info about what the story is with that plane would be appreciated. By the way,I just found a seller on our local trading site who imports and sells some XD,he is getting zilch interest for any of his stuff, except from me;just bought my third plane in a week! :D

It would be a cool plane to have, but you could never take it out to the box. If you did, what you spent would be for nothing.

I wish he had a better picture of it on the auction. Or 21st C would have produced it.

The S2 Spinach 109 never saw store shelves. It was an on-line retailer plane only, which is unique to the XD line except for the Boyington Corsair (for the time being), Checkertail Corsair and the Snake P-38. I don't know if it had lower production numbers or not, but you would figure so due to the lack of availability.....

Congrads on finding a local XD source. You can always help sales by informing others about the XD line. That goes a long way to increase awareness.....

I beg to differ - I have a feeling it would be worth a pretty penny loose too....

Oh yes, if this is the same model it is fully legit and a very, very interesting story in itself. I remember from GP's board when this was first ordered and delivered. It was the first "variation" seen after the first series 109. We all discussed it for a few days, and decided it "must" be the next paint scheme 21st was going to introduce. Then, it appears 21st contacted the buyer and told him that shipment was a mistake, 21st would like to buy it back from him. We all thought this was odd, and advised him to hold onto it as something was up! Shortly afterward, we heard 21st had offered to send in trade virtually one of everything they made, along with a refund of the purchase price, PLUS some "incentive" money (which we were never told how much!) to try and get this plane back. It was all very odd, and there was quite a bit of speculation about why this is so important to 21st. One of the leading theories was it is a sample that was to be a store exclusive, and when the plane ended up in a customers hands before the exclusive could be set, the store cancelled it's order. In any case, it'll be something worth watching closely!

Interesting story! If it'd been me I probably would have given it back. I mean he'll probably get a decent price for it but c'mon, 21st offered him one of everything? I guess hindsight's 20/20, but still, even then I think I would have taken that deal.

If I'm remember correctly he had this for sale on Ebay once before and pulled it before the auction ended. Said that he decided to keep it since it was a one of a kind.

Yep. He actually asked the board about it and we suggested he keep the plane. He then pulled it.

The S2 109 did sell at the Hungate's hobby shops, got mine there at the one in New Bern, NC for $39.99 back in 2002. :P

he should have told them he wanted one of each existing plane AND one of every future release! THAT would've been worth giving up the desert 109
