Lets see some of photos of your customs and conversions.

Post by rschaap » Thu Jul 21, 2016 8:07 am

I know there is a lot of talent on this forum and I've heard a lot of members talk about some of their customs and conversions. I either missed their post or photos were never posted. I know I would enjoy seeing some photos. So here is your chance to showcase some of your stuff. I included photos of three of mine. I have a few in the works and will post photos when I finish them.

Vietnam era M113A1 with Pickel's conversions and an added recoilless rifle.

Here are some photos of my work custom/conversion work going back over a decade and across different scales. For the most part, I have left out kits that I built to keep with the spirit of the thread in focusing on customs and conversions. Enjoy :D

My first custom job - Build-a-Rama stowage attached to the 21c 1/18 scale M-113A3 (2005). In 2016, I revisited the model to add Pickelhaube's turret shields:

My latest custom job - repaint and modifications to the Armor Hobbies 1/6 scale SdKfz 250 halftrack (2016):

Here are a few other custom/conversion jobs in order by the year I made them in...

FOV 1/32 scale Matilda II Repaint - repainted to an early-war BEF scheme with weathering (2016):
Image

21c 1/18 scale M113 Conversion - backdate to Vietnam era M113A1, using Pickelhaube turret shields (2015):
Image

FOV 1/32 scale Action Grade M-5 Stuart - added additional mud weathering (2015):
Image

FOV 1/32 scale Panzer IVG - added additional mud weathering (2015):
Image

Hasbro Indiana Jones German Motorcycle - Added Pickelhaube's sidecar conversion kit (2010); Pickelhaube 1/18 scale SdKfz 222 Armored Car model kit - full build of kit (2009):
Image

21c 1/18 scale Panzer IV R/C Conversion - repaint into DAK livery and tan paint (I have since added darker mud weathering and more paint chipping effect over the years)

Just finished today, a small custom work on a BBI Super Humvee. Actually, it is a wreck with many broken parts, but I decided to try to do something with it and I hope to find another one to do the same:
Not so much to see on this general view. Note that 2 figures have home made sun glasses, made with these wired plastic attach that we always have to cut to get our new toy out of the box. The radio has now a microphone and there is a new long antenna (steel wire).
Image
For the driver, speed selector, brake lever. Some charts of Afghanistan from google, reduced with my PC. Added a shovel and a failure triangle folded in its slipcover (sorry, I don't know the correct English words for this) and covered the hole under the driver's and passenger's seats with mosquito-net on cardboard. Of course, I have no idea how it is really in a humvee, so, for Veterans on this board, it may look poorly realistic.
Image
Oah, I forget to mention the rear view Mirror, the camo net (cut into an individual camo and mosquito net found for cheap in a military surplus)

Ok finally getting the Photobucket dialed in.

Here we have Pckel's Fabulous HO-229 in a group shot with my TA-152H and a FW-190A that I did a long while back. Fictitious markings on the A model were just a little easy mod to the original 21st paint

Another A model in progress. This has a couple revised areas and some things that need a little more work. Currently in primer. With the new A model from Merit hopefully imminent this will be the last one I do most likely.

MK 46 Seafire in progress. I elected to just wing it here on where to cut and add. Pretty much eyeballing this one. Lotsa work to go. Started 7-8 years ago and just languishing as of late. Gear track will be inaccurate and I haven't created the deeper double radiators needed yet. It will be a big challenge to get the prop assembly reasonable looking. Prop sets do rotate independently from each other but are not geared to counter rotate. Canopy is from a " "Laura Michelle" early P-51 I chopped up.

My biggest attempted custom 1/18 yet!! Inspiration by Pickel and Pizza guy!!! Hopefully this project will yield a final result allowing lots and lots of custom paint schemes, mods, and inspire some other efforts! Planning a Reinforced resin or Fiberglass fuselage with modularity for a variety of variants. It's going to be a slow project so probably just updates as significant milestones are reached. Drawn in cad and 3D printed in ABS filament. I'll try to find an image with proper orientation here real quick

SWEETNESS !!! I still don't understand why they haven't put out an A-4 series yet. Personally I would want a E and M version.

Most of you have probably seen the thread but, for those who haven't, here is my 1/18th scale F-14B conversion. Still a WIP but, she's getting there.

Custom made resin bomb racks, pallets and, MK-82's make her a one of a kind in this scale.

That Tomcat thread is awesome bud!! You're really raising the bar in the 'Cathouse!! You'll be happy to hear the Skyhawks will be an A-4E. Anyone wanting the earlier versions can probably backdate and modify the nose, intakes etc for the earlier versions. The learning curve on the 3D printing has been steep but is leveling off somewhat. My process is nowhere close to what I wanted or originally envisioned but the Scanner tech I've come across isn't quite suitable for a "SCAN, resisize, PRINT 1/18 model kit please" process I wanted! Some traditional scratch building an modeling is going to accompany the 3D work.

Ps. I'm almost ready to do a run of Bombcat D model chin pods. I finished one and put it on one of my BK cats but I recently took it off and modified it to accept lighting. I was able to locate some lenses for the optics and it should be pretty neat!

  • An attack bird like the Skyhawk would be a nice addition to my Jet collection. I hope all goes well with the build and we see it in the future.

As the Skyhawks come along I'll post updates. I'll start a thread fairly soon. I'm enlisting help on the project so standby for details. I only have a short window until the end of August to get the next 3D printed prototype done. I'll share some details on that soon also. The sheer complexity and volume of molds and masters to be made makes me really appreciate the efforts of others that have brought us some of the customs we have seen. This thing is really simple in size for a 1/18 build but significant challenges of how to actually produce it are now upon me. I am starting to detail up how it will be assembled and that drives how to make the molds etc. detailing and adding a cockpit etc... Gear, external stores.... Whew!! Lots and lots of work. The 3D printing is great for the big shapes but I need to expand my tech capabilities to make the other pieces faster. Efforts are underway.

Been working on this razor back for ages. This was a photo taken last year (and it hasn't progressed further), but on this one I want to try and correct the pyramid shape canopy and make it more "flat" and correct. Also want to eventually add 3d printed undercarriage to give it the proper stance and put fatter wheels and tires on her. Probably going to paint here up as the "BIG STUD" checker tail. Also did some weathering to the Spitfire and SBD. I bought the spitfire with a busted leg so fixed that up which is enough for now. Gave the SBD a faded look from being out in that hot pacific sun.

Nice stuff Jay! The washes and weathering are really popping the detail on your birds!
