Curious about what % of diecast/prebuilt model collectors also build model kits to supplement their collections. I was mostly thinking about aircraft but can certainly apply to tanks, ships and other areas.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Well, right now I build to supplement the 21C and BBI/FOV planes I have, but as I have stated elsewhere I pretty much abandoned the 1/32 armor for 1/35 kits.

I haven't made the time to build all the kits that I have. I will buy models already built at toy shows, flea markets, etc. One of these days I'll get to the kits: armor, vehicles and planes...

I built kits as a kid. Stopped collecting models years ago until I discovered die-cast planes. Bought lots of die-cast planes for about ten years. Today, most of the die-cast plane models either don't interest me or the rare one that does interest me costs a lot more than I'm willing or able to pay.

As a result, I'm 99% a model airplane kit builder again with a very rare, once in a blue moon die-cast buy. Basically, for me you would have to switch your question around - "Do I buy die-casts models to supplement my plastic kit builds?"

I'm in the same boat. I buy diecast plane once in while to supplement my plastic builds.

I built kits since I was 5. Die cast sometimes supplements in the some interest, and dominate in others.

I started building 1/144 aircraft, then as work took precedent over hobby, started collecting 1/144 aircraft. Still a mixed bag of both. Do the same with 1/72 German Armor.

I do US armor in 1/35, but have some old 1/32 kits that got supplemented with 21st century stuff when I find it cheap. 1/32 AC are exclusively die cast ( I have a couple of un-built kits).

1/18 is supplemented with scratch builds or mods. Still lament that this didn't catch on.

i like finding the odd kits that are out of scale that are actually 1/32. or i will take a 1/35 kit and scan the peaces, print them at 109% then use them as a template to make them in 1/32. its a lot of work but im strictly 1/32 for everything in my collection for now on

Used to when I was young quite a bit, but not now so I voted no.

I'm also a one of these days guys, just don't have the time right now.

Unless you count the partial assembly pre-painted types like the gashapon 1:144 which do require some assembly and decals etc., but it's not the same thing as glueing everything together and painting every part. A sort of happy medium I can deal with rather than building models. I wish there was more of it in larger scales but then we'd have 21st Century Toys again. :?

From about 1989 to 2003 I build model kits of WWII and modern aircraft pretty regularly, but then with the ascendency of 21c, BBI, etc and all the diecast companies that offered pre-built models that were better than anything I built, my kit building greatly dropped off. I would occasionally customize a pre-built vehicle, etc but it was rare that I built a full kit unless it was something like one of Pickelhaube's 1:18 vehicles or one of the Pegasus kits.

However, with the demise of 21c and Unimax/FOV, I'm increasingly resorting to kits to get the aircraft and armor I want. For my latest project, I'm considering getting a 1/32 Mig-21 so I have an adversary jet to go with my BBI F-4 Phantoms. I've also got a couple submarine kits in the works, including that 1/35 scale Type XXIII U-Boat.

I still collect 1/48 diecast but I prefer to build models. It gives me a little more satisfaction to look on the shelf and see something I built. I also like to repaint diecast in schemes that aren't available.

I voted "yes" but, in reality, I hate making kits and---a few exceptions aside--I prefer to buy kit-makes on eBay, then code 3 them, sometimes entirely, sometimes only partially, as this is the aspect that I enjoy the most. I have found that, if one is careful and looks at the pictures and asks questions of the seller, you can usually find rather well done models at very reasonable prices on eBay.
