1/72nd P-36A Hawk

Post by Warbird Kid » Mon Dec 16, 2013 1:51 pm

1/72nd Monogram kit with after market resin cockpit and wheel well detail set. Markings are kit bashed to depict Ken Taylor's P-36A from the 15th Pursuit Group, 47th Pursuit Squadron. Taylor took off from Haleiwa Airstrip in Hawaii during the Attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941.

Nice build, WK. I hope that one of the diecast manufacturers----perhaps Corgi-----does a P-36/Hawk series in this scale soon. There are many schemes for many countries that can be exploited---with careful tooling design and planning.

Thanks Epap! Why wait? Build one of these suckers! You don't need to procrastinate and take nearly as much as time as I did. Or add the after-market parts. She still looks good. Fairly easy kit to put together.

That being said, I do look forward to a long production run of nice 1/72 die cast P-36s. For me, I hope 1/144th scale P-36s start popping out somewhere! All we have right now is a bad resin example from Japan and the nicer looking one on Shapeways.

There are a few ready-made P-36s out there. Aside from the Carousel 1 1:48th scale versions, there's a 1:72nd scale plastic replica of a Pearl Harbor P-36 by Legacy Of Valor and a 1:100th scale diecast rendition from a now rather old Atlas Editions series. Neither the Legacy Of Valor or the Atlas models are even close to current diecast standards in terms of quality, I must add.

Nice build, WK. 8)

Carousel 1 did the P-36 in 1/48, and while a good diecast model, it does come in some bizarre schemes.

Nice work. 8) Like the early war OD planes. Usually you see these in silver.
Stands to reason they painted some this way just before the attack.

So Kenneth Taylor flew one of these at one time before he jumped into his upgrade P-40B Tomahawk on Dec. 7th then.

Excellent build. I like the OD colour. I've been thinking about building the Hell Cat in 1:48 since I've never built any American ww2 planes before.

Thanks guys! Glad you appreciate her. I'll have to take a pic of her next to the FROG P-51A I built and put up here awhile ago.
