A Corgi HE-111 Redo

Post by Epap » Thu Jan 31, 2013 11:02 am

For years, many of us have admired the much published artist's rendition of a HE-111 based in northern France that was repainted for night bombing missions during the BOB. Its undersides are blacked out and the upper surface has been repainted a dark gray----instead of the two-green splinter pattern----over which the ground crew has applied nifty dark squiggles. Here's a picture of the artist's handiwork:Image

Not surprisingly, both Corgi and CDC Armour/FM have put out replicas of the HE-111 using this scheme however, if one thinks about it, it seems rather odd that the Luftwaffe's hard pressed ground crews would really go to the trouble of repainting the entire upper surface of the HE-111 in gray, when the original two-green pattern was certainly dark enough for night bombing purposes. Here are several pictures of the plane in question on a mission to Great Britain. As can be seen, there are clear indications that the two tone green finish was not painted over and the dark gray squiggles were very casually applied, sometimes in Xs and probably via brushes----or, perhaps, brooms. Also, note the location of the unit emblem and the letter "E". Image

This shot shows the plane and some of its friends in a clearer fashion:Image

That looks really nice and I agree it is probably unlikely that they would have repainted over the green splinter camo. 8) Nice work!

Funny, but "battlefield" camo modifications were often sort of hap hazard, yet effective...
