XD Found!

Post by olifant » Wed Aug 29, 2012 4:08 pm

I haven't posted here in years but last week I took a trip to memory lane.

I went to a swap meet where I look for antiques and old woodworking tools and my jaw dropped when I found a Flying Tigers P-40 NIB. It must have changed hands a few times as the box is a little beat up but I was able to buy it for $30. I already have one on display and I still have the mounds of 21C stuff from the Wal Mart clearance sales and my gorging during the Monkey Depot sell off but I couldn't help it. Took me back to the time when the "Thrill of the Hunt" ruled and I could not wait to get my next fix.

As a side note to this I was in Vegas over the weekend and on Freemont street there is a vintage toy store that is billed as "As seen on Pawn Stars" as their go-to Toy expert. With the exception of a 1/6 German cycle with sidecar and a FOV 1/32 Matilda and F-14 he had nothing we love. Obviously tastes are poor in Vegas...

Anyway, had to share my find. Best to all!

I haven't seen the proprietor of that Vegas store on Pawn Stars lately. Didn't he have a problem with the law?
Flea markets and swap meets are a great place to find stuff..

Glad to see you're back again, Olifant :D Sure has been a long time!

The hobby took a nose-dive for sure, but is slowly getting back in the swing of things, albeit in a much more limited (and expensive) fashion. There have been some great BBI 1:18 repaints as of late, and of course, the Merit SBD Dauntless.

1:32 is still chugging along with Unimax FOV releasing a ton of repaints this year and some new items - but as their prices have risen, the overall quality has dropped.

I'd be curious to know what sort of problems that toy-guy from Pawn Stars ran into... I just watched an episode the other day (re-run) that had him.

Thanks for the heads up Tristan. I have tried to stay current but $200 for new 1/18 and $70 for 1/32 doesn't make me want to shell out the cash. Between other hobbies and the huge piles of stuff I have in storage I can't justified the spends. I know, I was spoiled with cheap prices and helped cause the decline of the hobby yadda yadda but hey, it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks to the Intel on the 1/32 board I did pick up a cool dozen FW190s and Mustangs at Tuesday Morning! :D Three stores are now empty!

Anyway, good to be back and I will check in from time to time.

BTW if you are reading this Picklehaube, your stuff is impressive as all hell. Keep up the good work!

Regards, Steve.

The toy expert was arrested for attempted murder. He was apparently choking or strangling someone. I don't think he's been on any of the 2012 episodes.
