Great job !! You are correct in the weathering. Weathering needs to be EXTREMELY subtle or it looks like crap. Most overdo it.
WWII stuff serving in war zones take more of a beating, and exposure to harsh conditions, so SOMETIMES they can get away with heavy weathering.
