1/18 Home Made Patrol Boat

Post by granch » Sun May 21, 2017 3:50 pm

Hi Guys,
Here is my last creation. It started more than 20 years ago with a project of a 1/22th steamer. But the steam machine was too heavy and too high (and my technical skill with small brass pipes too low) so I gave up and resell the steam machine, but could'nt decide to throw the hull away. First trial with an other idea, again with a 40 years old Remote Control, the water line was too high and the general shape not as good as I wished:

So, I had to cut it to make the hull longer and higher. Used a lot of recycled stuff (a cement tube cap for the loudspeaker, beauty fluid bottle top for the radar, chicken cage wire mesh for the boarding ladders...), searched a long time for adequate sized life rafts (and finaly made them with balsa). So, here it is:

The rear deck:

The bows with its remote controlled mobile gun turret:

View into the cabin (have other pics if you want to see more détails):

Checking the lighting:

And first water probe:

Could'nt go far, I've got some problems with my old 40 MHz RC...

... but hope to resolve that and be able to show later "real" missions. Also hope you enjoy it.

That is really impressive :D

I know there is a decent patrol boat tooling made for the Chap Mei/True Heroes line that with a little work could be made into something decent...

I forget the name, but they've had several versions of the same basic tooling. One had a big "bofors" gun on the back; the current one has some type of missile-launcher/helicopter pad on it. The basic hull and cabin look pretty decent though and with some modification, the Chap Mei boat could be made to look pretty good...

I found the Chap Mei on eBay. It looks smaller than the PTE PBR. Agree with you ttt, it could make a decent thing. But as a very small fast boat, only two 7.62 MG could be mounted on it (what, a Bofors? ), one front looking but located on the cabin roof and the second one at the aft. Not sure if it would float.

Tweeking toys is a nice hobby, but I would probably prefer to go on with the last BBI Navy Seal Gunboat Boat. Buying two to make one larger and longer model, closer to the original.

OK, I could solve the problems of my old remote control device (it is 40 y. old...) and launch the boat in the water. I'm proud to could finish this project, my own plans, a lot of recycled material, all wood construction... the engine is from a car vacuum cleaner and the 4 1,5V batteries are a little bit too weak to run the boat properly. Some more work if I want to try it in more open waters than the little pond for the 1st trial...
