Skyworks Fw190A Conversion

Post by norman888 » Sat Dec 03, 2016 11:24 am

Staying on my roll here! Dug up the Skyworks Fw190A conversion. Fit and detail is good. Cut off the tail extension and starting to add details for a Fw190A-8/R2 Sturmbock version. I also bought 2 of the WWGR21 wing rockets from Nick at Anyuta. Still deciding on what paint job to do, probably from JG3. Need to make the 30mm cannons, add armor on fuselage sides and possibly armored glass to sides of canopy.

Notice difference between Fw190D spinner and the one from Merit's A version. It looks like Skyworks exaggerated the front opening of the engine to fit the Fw190D spinner. In reality the D version spinner looks better than the actual A version! Was going to cast one but may just use what I have.

Funny how the conversion parts I will be using here are from past members with "questionable" histories!

Hope you all enjoy. Next will be Ki-61 and then a Ta-152.

Here is how she stands right now with a coat of future and awaiting the final matte clearcoat. Going to try and cast a propeller and spinner from a Merit Fw190A. Will see how that goes as I have not cast very many parts and the shapes will not be easy for me.

Did not know about the tail wheel---after all these years! Scared me to death but with a great yank I got it to pull down. It sits much better now.

Yes, I really like the Sturm paintjobs. Wish Merit had chosen a much more "tough" scheme for their version out of all the many, many available! May have to repaint it oneday---but that is another project.

I discoverd it in 2005 ! while "playing " with the DORA ... i was thinking that no real life tail wheel is so low ....

and it looks quite good with more details ...

Finally was able to make the resin copies of the Merit Fw190A spinner. Used the Alumilite kit from Hobby Lobby and they came out great. Next step will be to copy the propeller blades or use the blades from the Fw190D and sand them down to shape. Probably try that first

I have such a skyworks-Kit too. Is it possible for you to do one more copy of the spinner and (maybe) blades? For the costs you need to let me know.

Crazy Kraut;

We could probably work something out. Postage to Germany will be the killer here. I'll let you know after I do (or not) the blades.

Was able to cast 6 separate blades before the mold ripped! I just made it!

Now have to attach the 3 blades together wihin the spinner and of course paint the spiral. Wish me luck on that.

So got the spiral painted in black and white and the blades in RLM70. Now have to figure how to attach blades into spinner with the correct amount of angle/pitch. That's the Fw190D spinner to the left just to compare.

Shot of the resin copy of the Merit spinner and prop blades. These came out very well.

Here she is finally completed. I was actually done a couple weeks back but I noticed one of my Fw-190s had an early version canopy! This was Michalski's---I have 2 of them and one has the late blown canopy while the second has the early version. Has anyone else noticed that? Had to swap out canopies to get early version on this bird.

This is Moritz's Fw-190 A-8/R2 from JG3 Sturm. Definitely was a blast for me. Hope you all like. Real life is starting to get in he way of my Ki-61 but I have slowly begun cleaning up the resin parts.

Looks very nice!

I once had a Hobby Master 1/48 scale model of that same plane.

And yeah, 21c had a mixture of canopies on their FW190D9s... I'm not entirely sure why, but it may have had to do with some of their specific schemes having the newer "blown" canopy while some had the older design. However, given 21c's notoriously-bad QC, they seemed to mix things around so one wound up with aircraft that should have had one type of canopy but instead had the other.

Can you repost these pics using another hosting site like Imgur or something else. Your photobucket links are now dead and I'd really like to see how this came out because I've got a similar project still waiting for some parts. :?
