Corsair replacement wheels. Available now.

Post by Jay » Wed Dec 19, 2012 1:09 pm

Currently working on these replacement wheels for the 21st Corsair.
They are more correct in their thickness (as accurate as the original drawings I measured off). These will screw straight into the current struts using the existing screws.
I originally did these, as my current Corsair's landing gear struts broke. So in the following weeks i'll also do a more accurate set of legs (However, these may need some work to install).
Currently these are $18.85 for the pair at Shapeways, but i'll do some final tweaking and order a set myself before making them available.
Any comments/input is welcome.

These look great, I'm tempted to use them on the P-47 as well.

Any plans on making a pair for the P-51? I would love to have a set to replace the skinny stock ones.

Hey Rudedog, to be honest I haven't done anything since my last post.
The wheel kits are ready to go, but the hold up is my current finances ( ). I've only just returned to work after 5 weeks holiday which has also been reflected in my bank account. I also just checked and the cost of shipping to NZ is more than the cost of the actual wheel kit!
So I'm afraid it will be another few weeks before i'm able to get a set shipped down here.

Rudedog (and anyone else) I can make them available to you now BUT, it will be under the provision that they are untested and at your own risk!
They should be scale accurate, but the main concerns would be the overall fitment. Some parts may require some minor modelling work to fit (but if anything parts may be to tight). Also, I'm not sure about the wall thicknesses. I made them as thin as possible to have the least amount of material, but still sturdy enough (in my opinion) to be rigid and strong. How this works out, I'm not sure.

As for wheels for the Mustangs, yes it certainly is a possibility. I'm not sure how the Bbi ones are fixed, but the 21st ones have a pin "axle". Hopefully these are easy to pry out. The good thing about the 21st Corsair wheels is that they are screwed on.
The other thing is time, and seeing as though the corsair wheels have had the gestation period of an elephant, I can't tell you when I would do a Mustang set.

Here is the first test set.
Seeing as this is my first print out, there was a couple of points that came up (Grunt probably has come across these already with his incredible prints).
Firstly there was two areas where the fit was two tight. The hole where the stock landing gear legs slots into, and the center cap that covers the screw head.
I thought I had these set when I did the CAD work, but obviously i made the tolerance too tight so will will correct the CAD model.
Lastly, when I first received the parts i was a little disappointed with the lack of detail compared to the CAD model. However, after playing around i noticed that there was just excess powder still in the crevices. I quick once over with a small stiff brush (I used one of those brushes you use to scrub your fingernails, an old toothbrush would also do the trick) and all the excess powder came out revealing the detail!
Next stage is getting these painted.......

Thanks RD. I shot a few coats of primer on last night. Will be doing some Nato Black and Alluminium painting tonight.
In the process, I reamed out the holes for the strut and screw plug. Now I have a better idea of the hole size tolerences.
Will post final pics this weekend, so looks like these will roll out early next week.
Stay tuned.

Painted up and ready to roll.
One thing these pictures don't show are the center caps.....which brings up an issue.
For the guys thinking of getting these. Do you want a cap that fits snug (and will probably need pliers to pull back out) or do you want a loose fit (which would probably require a drop of glue to keep secured).
Also, I would recommend going for the "polished" plastic finish at Shapeways. The "layering" of the material is noticeable in the spoke area (the test set being the default and cheaper plastic)....just a suggestion.

Store is now live.

Prices are "wholesale" at the moment but will put a markup on them at a later date.

On Shapeways, is the $5.21 price for one tire or the pair? Has anyone else made a purchase yet? Just wanting to make sure I complete all hurdles when I'm buying my sets.

Thanks

Hey Bryce. I've just updated the kit so all the parts, needed to convert one Corsair, are on one sprue.
If you grab a set, you'll be the first :) .
