a custom RACING P-51 reminded me a sad crash ! RIP !

Post by supersonicfifi » Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:54 pm

It was a sad & horrific crash during RENO last year but i found a picture of J. LEEWARD holding a visibly 1/18 BBI or 21st Century Toys P 51 MUSTANG :

The nose, cockpit and wings are highly modified to depict "Galloping Ghost"

Nice custom even if it's a sad story : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... plane.html

May we have a thought to all the victims of this very sad tragedy...

I remember when that accident happened I was greatly saddened for the loss of life. And the enthusiast in me was sad for the loss of such a beautiful plane. I've never had the chance to catch an air race in person but they appear exhilirating and dangerous. Unfortunately on this occasion it was moreso the latter. That being said the custom "Galloping Ghost" is about as cool a P-51 as I've seen.

There was one I believe called "Stiletto", I think it raced in the 80's. It's alot like the Galloping Ghost, ie tall tail, race canopy, and clipped wings. The other one I can think of off the top of my head is "Precious Metal". Again it is an air racing mustang so certain aspects are very similar to the previous two. I believe it runs two counter rotating propellors for a total of 6 blades. The plane is known for the shiny props they run and in my humble opinion some really hideous green wings.

As for custom models there was a guy who worked at a hobby store down here in Orlando who built a complete range of P-51s in 1/18 scale. Most of which were mods of 21st century and bbi stuff. He also did a couple air racers including the Stiletto.

If you have some time on your hands this website has quite a few pictures of racing Mustangs both original condition and modded. The Stiletto and Precious Metal are in near the bottom of the page.

Hope you enjoy it

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I used to peruse that site and http://www.warbirdregistry.org/index.html to see what planes have survived, which are still flying, which have been modified, etc. The real problem is it requires quite a bit of free time and patience.
