My HO 229 Build- 5/28 Update-Completed

Post by YT » Tue Mar 27, 2012 2:37 pm

I'm on vacation this week, so my goal is to build it this week. I started by washing off all the parts with Comet.

YT, this is not a difficult build. Pickel's Horten 229 is a very well thought out kit and goes together rather quickly.
Have fun, its a great model!

This project got bumped for the 229... :(

Some filling, just minor pinholes for the most part, nothing to speak of for a kit of this complexity.

If this helps with the painting, here are some matches that are easy to obtain, and airbrush great!!!

Still working on the list. Here's what I'm gathering so far, all seem to be nice looking matches. Assuming you're doing the grey/dark gray scheme.

All tamiya acrylics.
RLM 74:- XF24:3 + XF27:2 ---- XF24:3 + XF27:2 + XF2 to taste (20%)
RLM 75:- XF24:5 + XF50:1 ---- XF24:5 + XF50:1 + XF2 to taste (20%)
RLM 76:- XF2:7 + XF23:1 + XF66:2

Not much of an update, just dry fitting it. I have to tackle the gap in the wings next. It looks so impressive with the wings fitted.

I obviously did not achieve my goal of finishing before I went back to work. Now everything is moving at a snail's pace. Work is off the hook busy so I am just getting a little time at night after the kids are put to bed.

The wing seams were real rough to fill. I really wish I would have spent more time fitting and aligning them. It would have saved me a ton of time and putty. I got the bare metal I plan on leaving behind the engines painted also.

What happened? why the big gaps?, dont get me wrong, it looks great but I was wondering if there is a fitment issue I needed to know before I built mine..

Pickel covered it in his build directions, there is definitely some asymmetry in the wings and subsequently a gap. It can be minimized with a lot of work, but will still be there to some extent no matter what you do.

Got the filling done, it is not perfect but will have to do:

Laid down the base coat:

It looks very green and glossy, but subsequent processes will take care of that. (Hopefully)

YT, your moving along nicely. The 229 looks great with some color on it, in its resign white color you don't see all the details. Now back to work.
