Sd.kfz 251/9 Kanonenwagen
Some pics of my sdkfz 251/9 Kanonewagen or Stummel. Started this a few years ago and lost interest working on it. I thought I would take another crack at it. Here's what I have so far.

Looks good so far you should be able to steal the barrel of of the Panzer IV short nose.

Thanks,
I don't have one of those. I made the barrel parts on the lathe but I have to redo the end part, I'll just make it out of Aluminum.

I wish I had a lathe and to know how to use it.
I use brass tubes and Bondo. Then I chuck it in a drill and spin and sand.
I have made every barrel I made this way.
M-10
T-34/76
T-34/85
M-3 tank destroyer
T-23 turret
Firefly
Stuka cannon
Of course if I had a lathe I do not know how to use it.
YOURS LOOKS GREAT !!!!!

Re: Sd.kfz 251/9 Kanonewagen
Thanks Pickelhaube,
I use that method too, soldering brass bits together and turning them in a drill chuck. I made things like the hanomag crank caps, wheel caps and anything small and round this way.
and your barrels always look great, I'd still like a set of those stuka cannon's.
How do you make things like the wheels and tires on your sdkfz 222 if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Sd.kfz 251/9 Kanonewagen
That is a useful tip. I haven't made many from scratch, but I sure feel like a caveman with my (styrene tube+Xacto Knife) x (Me cutting as I turn the tube+ Sanding) method. And yes, it took foreverpickelhaube wrote:I use brass tubes and Bondo. Then I chuck it in a drill and spin and sand.

I cheated on the 222 and used a Hanomags tire. I just sanded it to shape and depend the side lugs.
I also used the Hanos wheel . I turned it around sanded off the detail and added my own. The inner wheel ridge was made by spinning on a dremel and cutting the outside whit an x-acto and then cutting the inside to make a ring. Then I sanded the ring profile as a half moon.
On my barrels I use a long brass tube approx 4 inches longer than the barrel tube that I need.
Then I use brass tube rings the size that I need ( small muzzle side of the tube large mantlet side of the tube).
Then I get a sheet of wax paper and sprinkle some denatured alcohol on it .
Then smear bondo on the center tube.
Then roll kit like dough on the wet waxed paper.
I do this till the center section is full and has taken the size of the barrel.
When all is said and done I chuck one of the ends in a drill and I spin sand it.
The first barrel took about a day to do. Now I can make one in less than an hour.

Re: Sd.kfz 251/9 Kanonewagen
Nothing wrong with cheating in model building. Interesting method to converting the hanomag wheels, they turned out great. I will probably have to try using a paper models method as I don't have any spares to convert.
Thanks for the info.

Re: Sd.kfz 251/9 Kanonenwagen
Small update. Got the basic gun cradle and ramp built minus details.
Working 2 jobs doesn't leave me much time to work on models.
Looking forward to building the breech guard out of brass and the detail parts.
