Aferguson, look no further than static grass. My dad is big into trains, and has successfully used static electricity to create fields of grass.

-Spray the surface with 70% alcohol and let it soak for a few minutes

-Apply Woodland Scenics Scenic cement, a diluted matte medium that will affix the turf and provide an adhesive base.

-Apply rayon- based fibers with a Noch Gras-Master. You should use a grounding clip.

-The Gras-Master's 9-volt battery and grounding clip gives the grass a static charge. The grass is repelled but cannot escape the glue.

I hope this helps!

The grass is 1 3/4" tall. Normandy and I did some research and I think he found something very similar for cheap. Maybe he can chime in.

Yeh, Trigger gave me a heads up on the mats...
These were the grass mats I ordered.......... http://www.amazon.com/Sisal-Grass-Easte ... B001QJBZNA they were from a company called creative concepts out of Chicago. They are 16"x16"x1 1/4''.
I haven't done much with them yet....I've only had them two years  I don't think there is any quick or easy answer to scale grass. These mats are thick..... a 1:18 thank sits on top of the mat, if you were to cut the grass so the tank tracks sit closer to the base it might look as if the tank is in a grass field. But you'll need to do some painting and trimming. Just look at Weylens diorama and the amount of work he put into that area of grass.

I'll keep looking Andrew..........

This might be similar.......... http://www.save-on-crafts.com/grassmats1.html

I did a large Kursk diorama back in the day and may do another soon.

Use Woodland Scenics field grass, its 2in tall, I use non dry model clay, roll it out about an eighth of an inch thick, use a paper clip to nudge the clay over each clump of grass, work from one corner out going back in forth in staggered rows. It great for 1/18 and 1/16 dios, the golden color looks like the wheat fields of the Ukraine.

May I suggest a simple way: back to nature. Delimite the surface you need in your garden, take off the clumb with the grass, then cut the surplus of soil from the underside and let it dry. At the end, pour something like a thick resin or plaster on the underside to have a non breaking base. I think that it could be possible to keep the grass green with the same product that the home & garden stores use for christmas trees.

Have a look at aquarium accessories, I've seen some mats of plastic grass I thought would pass for use with 1/18.
