How to get Future off? My Custom M113 (Op. IRAQI FREEDOM)

Post by pcoughran » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:07 pm

I'm in the middle of a M113 repaint and decided to "brush on" Future. It turned out pretty streaky so now I'd like to take it off and either spray it on with an airbrush (any tips for that?) or just go with what I'm familiar with - gloss coat spray can.
I've hear Windex with Ammonia takes Future off but does it hurt acrylic paint underneath and do you just spray it on and wipe off with a cloth?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Phil

Future will come off with alcohol or Windex, I don't know what it will do to your paint, but I would guess it will come also. When I airbrush Future, I do it at 100%, but some thin it with Windex or alcohol. Just put it down in thin coats to avoid runs.

Before you get radical on it. Try spraying another coat of future on it. That could be enough to flat the treaks out.

Maybe 2 coats.

After you build it up you could try to SLIGHTLY SAND with 400 or 600 grit sand paper to smooth it out.

Try first on the bottom to experament.

Here's a couple pics of what I'm talking about - first is the good side with no FUTURE.
Image

Here's the FUTURE side:
Image

It's not horrendous I guess (probably seen some real M113s with just about as bad paint jobs) so don't know if it's worth the effort to strip down and repaint, or try Pickel's method - don't think building it up will make it look any better will just have built up streaks? I made the mistake of trying to brush it on too thick then after noticing pooling - I tried to brush the pools out - should have left alone then probably could have added more on top. Oh well.
I think it looks much better without all the cheap plastic looking stowage on the sides - even with the streaks. I only put the FUTURE on one side as I am only decaling the sides so no gloss on the front back top bottom.

Maybe the picture is not showing it, but I think it does'nt look that bad.

A touch of weathering and I'd doubt you could see it.

TO keep the Future talk going, how durable is Future as a coat for action figures? Anyone tried it?

Well Windex and a cotton cloth worked fairly well, was able to get most of the streaks out without messing up the Acrylic paint underneath. I couldn't get 100% up as it did start to take up some paint so had to stop when I saw the cloth changing color. But, most of the large streaks are gone so hopefully will look pretty good in the end. When I get it decaled I'll post some more pics.

Soak the whole thing in water for an hour or so. It's water soluble. It's faster to remove it with windex, but if you want to preserve the paint underneath, water is the best removal tool for Future.

I'm pretty much done with the interior now. The exerior decals are done, just need to weather and apply some dullcote. I will probably add some antenna on top as well - oh yeah, need to put the tracks back on.

Here's the real interior followed by mine:

My Custom M113 (Op. IRAQI FREEDOM)

Post by pcoughran » Tue Nov 23, 2010 11:11 am

Here's the final weathered exterior. I still want to detail the antenna a little more and maybe add some "stowage." I'm debating adding Pickel's turret sheild.
Also, decided to leave the mounting posts on the interior to allow me to handle it a bit, I may take them out in the future. Even after the FUTURE fiasco it turned out pretty good.

Glad that the Future didn't destroy the "future" of your model.

Yes indeed! Thanks for your comment - it means alot coming from you.
What are you asking for these again? Would probably just want the main top turret not the side shields.
