Test fit of the wing on the "new" Mustang...

Image

Image

Image

The dihedral you see in this shot is only caused by the weight of the fuselage on the unsupported wing, even though it looks to be vey close to the required % degrees.

Image

That pretty much brings everything up to speed. Ill cover the windscreen rebuild next and then the fuselage center section.

Hope everyone is well...

Absolutely stunning. Any plans to incorporate the HPH 1/18 P-51D Engine? Not that it needs it, but you clearly have the talent to make it work.

Greetings All,

Its clearly been a long time since I last posted. The Mustang sat for quite a while. I just got lazy...no other excuse. Now that retirement has befallen me (yeah, Im that old) I have time now to work in earnest.

Much has changed in my approach and how I want this to end up. Hence, much of the prior work, while not a waste, since it had to be done anyway, has a new direction.

I kept looking at the rudder and elevator and decided they just didnt have sufficient scale fidelity. The underlying structure is visible under the doped fabric. My example lacked this. It was too flat. The rudder and elecators were stripped of all detail. I had used tape to simulate the structure in the first example and chose to stay on this tack.

The structures (ribs)were built up using 1/64 Letraset line tape after the the aluminum portions were added using Tamiya tape. Tamiya tape was then overlaid on the ribs to blend them in.

Image

Once the structures were built up, Tamiya primer was oversprayed to blend it all together...

Just my opinion, but I think it gives a more realistic representation of the prototype.

Geo,

I've been following this build, on the LSP forums, and have been amazed at your skills. This will be THE P-51 Mustang when she is completed. Keep up the outstanding work.

Steve,

Way glad youre still here and that you looked in. I hope youre well. What I do isnt skill...its tenacity and not having enough sense to quit. I make mistakes, lots of them...some really nuclear stupid. Just the same, thank you very much.

I was out past Willow Grove couple of days ago...depressing.

Is the 14 done? I have to look. Last I saw you were pretty close.Again, really good to hear from you...

Best,

Geoff

I took a major way in which the Mustang would be finished. Rather than the early gray over green, I decided to finish it natural metal. Ive never found paint to look much like aluminum. Even the metalizer paints always look like paint to me. In light of this, I decided to use printers litho plate.

Here are the results thus far. You can judge for yourself...

No sir, the Tomcat is not finished yet, still a ways to go I'm afraid. I'm hoping soon (fingers crossed).

greetings all

A bit more progress...

Began work on the tail fairings

Fabbed the upper fuselage skin and installed it. It has to be in place beforethe tail fairings can go on.

Image

Work was also started on the center upper fairing. This is no doubt going to take several tries, but Im encouraged by the first try. It came out better than I thought it would.

Image

Image

Ill be back when the center fairing is done...

Hope everyone is well.

Greetings All,

Work continues on the Mustangs empennage. The going is slow. Making the fin and nose fairing took quite a long time. I had to anneal the aluminum sheet to get it soft enough to make the required bends. The compound curve force the aluminum to do some pretty wild stuff.

On the real production machine, the nose fairing, also called the saddle that straddles the fuselage and wraps around the leading edges of the H stabs is made up of four pieces welded together. The welds were then ground smooth. Unfortunately, I couldnt replicate that so the entire saddle saddle had to be done as one piece.

Some photos...

Image

Nothing is permanently fixed in place yet.

Image

The saddle is still quite a bit oversize. I wont trim it to final size until Im ready to mount it permanently.

I know its not as much fun looking at pieces of an airplane, but to get to the airplane, you have to make the parts...

Image

The going is slow, but Im getting there...

Hope every one is well.
