1/18 Custom ~ FW-190D-11 Stab./JV44

Post by Jnewboy » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:36 pm

When I was young I remember ridding 8hrs on way in a car to the Reno National Air Races. I was small then and the long nosed racing airplanes looked even bigger and cooler. When I was older I saw pictures of a D-11 and it took me back to those days of looking at those planes when I was a boy. The long nose, smooth with no bulks bumps where MG were in the D-9. The huge air intake for the larger supercharger gives it that awesome air racing look. This was a rare version of the Dora, the middle step between the FW-190D-9 and the TA-152. More horse power, no cowling guns, added 30mm cannons on the outboard wings, 20mm's in the roots and one 30mm in the nose!! though most were not fully installed in the nose but opening and compartment were ready. A huge uptick in fire power, able to destroy bombers but more importantly protect the me-262s against the rugged p-47's and with this firepower package could destroy one in a single pass where the D-9 had trouble doing so in the first pass and usually weren't given a second.

As far as a model goes I poured my heart into this one as it is a childhood favorite.
beyond the obvious custom mods no expense was spared, detail stenciling, exhaust, cowl flaps, gun soot, dry brushing, honestly it goes on and on..

Yes I even put seat belts in it...

I may sell it but my price wont be cheap and it wont go down. I love this plane!! Hope you guys do to, Big shout out to Jackson for helping with the custom decals! Thanks Brother!

This year I will be doing a A-8, I wish I could talk Pickel into making the wings for a 152
It would be awesome in 1/18 scale! Thanks for all your help!

The D-11 is great! Without the bulges of the machineguns on top it looks even more 'long-nosed' - coming closer to the Ta 152, one of my favorites. Good idea to open up the Kühlerspreizklappen, cowling flaps, makes it even more alive..

Is it the rudder? I think it just another extension plug further extending the tail like was done between the A series and the D series

Does a whole wing need to be made ? Wouldn't an extension suffice ? Just like I did for the Stuka .

The curve is more extreme even at the wing root I think.
You may be able to use some of the under body portion of the factory wings and the landing gear could be salvaged

upon further reading in my FW-190 book by Robert Grinsell the TA-154 had other body extensions and other mods. To make a perfect one it would be very time consuming.

Very nice, but you realize that JV44 was the Galland protection squadron set up to fly topcover for Me-262s therefore they were all painted with the Red/white striped bottom. You would have been better off making this one "Red4" and it would be more accurate.

Also, Wrk No. 170926 was a V57 testbed aircraft coded GV+VY with the Jumo 213F MW50 powerplant. This aircraft was also recorded as never leaving the testing stage due to continual engine failures.

On a side note you CANNOT make an accurate Ta152-H from the Dora no matter how many wings and fuselages you have. The Ta152 looked similar to a Dora, but they are very different aircraft. You might be able to make a Ta152C, but its still questionable.
